What do you think of this trench? ETA pic of green trench

When spring arrives (oh....PLEASE arrive!), puffers will be put away and trenches will be brought out. The only trench I have is the green cotton one I thrifted last year, which although fab over trousers and jeans, doesn't look so great over dresses and skirts due to it's very casual nature.

I'm thinking a slightly dressier trench may be a wise purchase. I am willing to take something off my spring wish list for this if it makes sense.

I know I don't want black and beige looks dreadful on me - is this classic navy trench a good choice? It comes in petite, which is key for jackets.

I actually don't find it classic because of the zipper, actually, it's reading fairly casual (for a trench) to me... will be curious to hear other opinions.

I'm not sure what you're looking for but the zipper makes it more casual than dressy and it looks a bit more like a rain jacket than a trench. It seems a little plain for what you seem to need.

I go back and forth on length for myself, too--short is sporty but not as protective; just above the knee is better for real rain but can make me look short-legged. Bah. My solution so far is to have several types and no "perfect" classic trench.

I'm looking for navy outwear myself for spring which is why I jumped on this... I picked up something from Joe but it's definitely casual, not sure if I should keep it. Although I'm fairly casual as is my job there's definitely something about a classic trench that keeps me walking tall through the dressy Bay Street hordes on my way to work. Something to be said for classic, dressy trench styling. But NOT in beige for me either!

I think a knee length trench is easier with skirts and dresses Shannon.

Boden has a classic navy trench in petite right now (but I know you dislike international shopping).

Is the green one from Joe? I had very similar in blue a few years ago but purged it when I got a new one (also blue and from Joe, ahem, I have a problem). But I really wish I had kept it, actually.... this was when I had a one in, one out theory trying to keep myself current, some of my purges were misguided.

I agree that it's a casual style but the classic navy colour should give it more versatility than a standard anorak. I like the style a lot - maybe it's worth ordering and trying on with some of your dresses?

Jules - yes, the green one is Joe brand. It's cute with jeans, but too casual with dresses I find.

Julie - that navy Boden one is gorgeous! But unfortunately the international shipping for that one would make the cost pretty high.

There's also this bright yellow one from Nygard, also in petite http://www.nygard.com/peter-ny.....,U340K6579 but maybe yellow would be too difficult to work with? I do love it's "cheeriness" though.

Yes I agree it is casual. That is why I regret that I purged it for a classic style, now that I have a better eye and realize they would have had different functions. If I were you I would definitely be going for full classic styling since you already have casual. But also not beige or black which are too boring. However, I definitely think you have more mental and physical space in your wardrobe than I do. You have a great ability to style a lot of different pieces. Two trenches is already a big stretch for me but I can see you having several.
Navy is interesting this year because I think it is both trendy, and a classic. I like the BR "denim" version, the colour looks current. Loving the yellow one too.

Shannon, I quickly passed (was shopping with dh and in a hurry) by a classic navy trench at Joe Fresh yesterday for $79.00. Might be worth a look when you are grocery shopping!

Is it mostly for work? If yes I agree with the others that the zipper makes it more gear like. I also echo the suggestion to check out Joe Fresh if you can. They have a fab navy trench there at the moment. I have purchased several jackets, including a puffer, and can say they have all held up. That being said Winners etc will soon bring in a slate of trenches for you to choose from. I would go knee length for the most versatility. Also do you want a belted coat? I have a knee length trench that slightly flares out and goes to the knee. I have had it for 10 years and it is still wonderful. And believe it or not it was a Walmart find - I guess Angie is right - leave no retail stone unturned.

Typical Joe - I *knew* they would have navy trenches this season but my store last Sunday only had a casual-styled version. I nabbed it not thinking that a classic version would also appear. Neither are on their website! Not sure when I'll be back at Superstore either. Sigh.

I'd go with knee length for most coverage and versatility, if you can find. The one at Cleo reads casual to me.

Have you checked the Bay? Once they clear their sale stock something might come in. That's where I got mine last year, although I had to be content with black, alas....However, the black comes across as ink for some reason and seems to suit me pretty well. I just wear bright accessories.

Thanks for the feedback ladies - I think I will take Suz's advice and check The Bay once the spring stock starts coming in.

For the record Rachy, the green "smock" one you are referring to is the casual one I already own.

It's a lovely coat, Shannon, but I agree that a somewhat dressier trench might be more versatile. I love the idea of either a navy/ink blue OR a bright-coloured trench for you. (yellow would make you happy each time you wear it;-)
