I really like the colours and although they might look cute under jeans, they do look a little sportswear-y/gearish to my eye, and I personally wouldn't wear them with shorts.

I guess it's obvious I prefer sneakers that don't look very sneakery-y;-)
Also: what do you think of a flax oxford (with or without laces) instead of a sneaker? Could they serve the same purpose for you? They would look marvelous both with jeans and shorts (skirts and dresses too).

I think they're cute but gearish, especially with shorts. How about a pair of slip-ons (no socks) if you want them for shorts? They're are a lot of cute ballet/sneaker hybrids too if they're for warmer weather.

I can't vote b/c they are not my style. They look gearish (b/c of all the straps) but probably won't function as gear, so I would rather have functional gear in that respect. I hear Converse are out, but are all classic sneakers out? I own Vans (but you probably won't like Vans if you don't like Converse), but what about Keds, Simple or similar kicks?

Depends on what you want to use them for, I think.

I like them, but I want a pair of shoes like this for sportier type stuff I do, such as walking the dogs on trails and such. I don't want to wear my expensive running shoes for that, nor do I want to wear ballet flats either. These would fit the bill for me in that respect. Sporty, but low profile (unlike my runners which are huge! LOL)

Hmm. They are heavy on the bungees aren't they. Didn't notice that before everyone pointed that out. I don't mind Converse, they are on my list to try different styles. I can't wear anything "ballet" shaped because of my foot shape, hurts the "knuckle" on my big toe, so I avoid that shoe style. I am looking for something that is sturdy enough to wear to go to the playground, walk the dog, play outside, but not my sneakers. My sneakers look ridiculous to me now, unless I'm working out. I want something that looks decent with skinnies, shorts. I don't plan on wearing socks with them with shorts.

So, I'm thinking, what Kim said. Not sure if the pair I linked is it though with the bungees. Maybe a PUMA?

I give them a big thumbs up.

I live in a rural town and these are much smarter than anything else around. I don't hate "gear," I think gear can look cute. So maybe take my opinion with a grain of salt.

They are supportive and I see cute young climber girls wearing stuff like this...

I like them. If you are walking the dog, hiking trails, running around playgrounds, sometimes in mud, you need support and sturdiness.....Your clothes will probably be a little more rugged in those instances too.

I have shoes like these that I wear and think they look much better than my clonky white running shoes......

I never would have picked them out from the picture, but they look quite nice on. The taupe color sort of disappears on her feet. They are kind of gearish but not too much, You don't really notice them on at all.

I was actually going to post these as a suggestion on YLF because I was so impressed with them. If I had this hole in my wardrobe I would definitely consider them.

Definitely gear. If you plan to wear them with shorts, I'd go with one of the more ballet flat-like iterations.

I consider these gear, but here people wear this type of footwear all the time. I never distinguished between gear and casual until YLF. So as long as you don't mind the look and recognize the sneaker factor, I give them a thumbs-up.

Have you looked at Keen shoes? IMHO, if it's going to be gear, there's no point pretending it's not, and it might as well be cute gear...

All right. So, they are gear. I don't think the ballet style sneaker will work for my feet, but I think I'll try a pair anyway, since it sounds like they look much better with shorts in particular. Definitely trying the converse again and the Onisuka Tigers. I tend to lean toward more sporty styles for this area of my wardrobe. It fits my personality, TBH.
I'm the type of mom that is climbing the jungle gym WITH my kids. But, I don't like the clunky look of my trainers.

Cileena, I am the same, and I also live where we do a lot of off-road activities on foot. There aren't even sidewalks in my neighborhood, and not all the streets are paved. So I need play shoes that withstand dirt and mud and don't get gravel in them. Frankly, that's why I just wear my sneakers when I'm going to the park or for a walk - that's what gear is for, even if I don't like the look.

Keen and Merrell have lots of sneaker substitutes - and again, there is no shame in gear when you're using it as gear!

Cileena, so what if they're gear-ish, or "gear lite"? Isn't that what you want them for? I bought a pair of the Onitsuka Tigers last year because they are so cute, but they were too narrow for me. I can recommend the Merrell shoes that modgrl posted. They are extremely comfortable and very cute. Sometimes things like little bits of mulch or gravel find their way in through the mesh, though.
And I like the bungees.

MPJ: *chuckle*, those are quite nice (as were the ones Cilleena linked to in the first place). Both have the metallic colours going on that I quite love, but this one too is still a sneaker-y sneaker for me;-) However there's nothing wrong with that, and I think they will look lovely under pants, I personally just wouldn't wear them with shorts.

And like some of you have pointed out: if you know this is going to work in your wardrobe and for your lifestyle, then you should absolutely get them!

I'm passing on these in favorite of a pair of grey no-lace Cons. I forgot that I have a pair of Merrells that I can wear that are similar to the ones I linked. I can wear my Merrells if I think I'm going to get really active. As for with shorts, I'm going to try these:
