What do you think of dressy short suits?

So my local thrift store very often gets overstock from boutiques, and I picked up a gorgeous ivory silk jacket and matching skirt. The jacket fits like a dream, the fabric is beautiful--the only problem is that the skirt is a size 14 and I am a size 2. But I bought the skirt anyway, because I have a good tailor whom I trust to remake it.

BUT. Since the skirt is going to have to be completely remade anyway I have been thinking about having her turn the skirt (which obviously has a LOT of excess fabric) into dress shorts. I know the skirt is a more classic choice, but the fact of the matter is that an ivory silk suit is not really practical for my day-to-day life (I live in the city and have a commute) so it's going to be more of an evenings out outfit, and I thought a short suit might be more stylish. (I was thinking cuffed short shorts, but not too short--say, an inseam of 5'' or so).

If it makes a difference, I'm 31, and my legs are probably my best feature. What do you think?

I think it could be great for going out. I don't think it would work in a business way. (I recently bought satin clam diggers for a fun change from skirts)

I vote yay! I love shorts and suits - together they are a fab combination on the right body type.

I voted nay, although I admit I am somewhat biased because I just don't like shorts in general. I do think that fancy shorts outfits look better when the top part doesn't match the way a suit does. In my opinion, the jacket also needs to be shorter, maybe even cropped, and not oversized like in Anna's link. Something about the oversized jacket + short shorts combo just reminds me of a man in his suit jacket + boxer shorts!

I'm all for it, especially since you could still wear the shorts more casually. You must post before and after photos of the outfit (if not on you, at least so we can see the transition - I'm so curious to see!).
