When you see something from one of the seasonal fashion shows that you become obsessed with but know you will never be able to afford? I stumbled on a pair of shoes that I must have. Unless I win the lottery, there is no way I can ever afford them (even on sale) Help?

I can certainly be patient (I won't like it but, can do it) Any idea how long it takes for things to filter down from current season runway to 'real world?'

What do i do about an unaffordable obsession? Let's see . . .

1. Convince myself that there is something less than perfect with it ~ the heel is too high, it wouldn't be comfy to wear, it wouldn't fit me right/be flattering on me, it wouldn't look as nice IRL, etc.

2. Find that knock off!

3. Obsess and dream about it till a new obsession takes hold . . .

When I see something gorgeous and unattainable, I think about it a while. How would this item fit into my lifestyle? Sometimes the item of my fashion lust just is not practical for me to add to my wardrobe. But if I decide it WOULD work, I seek the closest affordable alternative. And I usually eventually succeed.

I recently saw a $15,000 Italian fur chubby in Harper's Bazaar. After drooling over it for several days, I decided I could live without it. LOL.

Everything gets copied eventually. I saw a Chanel bag in Monaco a year ago, the puffy styles and ALMOST purchased it. Here's a similar one.

Any time I see something expensive that I'd love to buy, I just glance into my two young son's mouths and see all the expensive orthodontia that's in my near future. Yikes!

But I agree, something similar but more affordable will eventually trickle down. I guess the question is, will you still be interested when it does?

I'd enjoy it vicariously and fairly soon something new comes along to grab my attention. I also would tell myself that there's a good chance that the puppy would make it a dog toy if I actually did indulge.

I lusted after a pair of $1500 black lace up boots by Ann Demeulemeester two years ago. They had a double lace up system. I stumbled into a local boutique that had DKNY single lace up boots on sale to boot only ended up being about $250. LAMB also knocked off it similarly.
I would troll all the major shoe sites. LAMB has a tendency to knock off high end stuff, as well as Dolce Vita.

Thanks everyone! I sat and really looked at these to figure out what it is I love about them so I can be on the look out for something that is realistic budget-wise for me. One of the things I realized, even if I could afford these, they are an amazingly impractical fall show purchase for me. It gets way too cold where I live to wear these for more than a few more weeks. Hopefully, in the spring I'll be able to find something similar.

What do I do? Well, I usually convince myself that I can "make" the item myself. So in the case of these absolutely gorgeous shoes - I would buy a sandal that had the basic straps and shape of the designer shoe. Then, I would go to a craft or sewing store and buy some studs and some glue and glue those babies onto the straps of the shoes, determined that they were going to look just like the designer pair. Then, the first time wearing them, I would start "shedding" studs or the glue would start melting onto my toes or one of the studs would stab me in the ankle and give me a horrible blister. It would be a nightmare and I would have to "give up" my dream of ever wearing those shoes - AND my dream of being a "shoe designer!"

I tend to fixate on "just out of reach" items rather than "never in a million years" items. For example, in what seems to be becoming a habit, my current one is a coat from Peruvian Connection: http://www.peruvianconnection......ds+coat.do

I just wait until my size is sold out and then move on. Usually takes about five minutes.
