What did/do you do with your wedding dress?

I purchased a knock off Maggie Sottero gown for my wedding, and I'm contemplating what to do with it. It is far too big for me now, and is too dramatic to wear for any occasion.

I'm not sentimental about it, so I could sell it and not miss it. I've also considered doing a trash the dress photo shoot.
So what did you do with your dress?

I'm not sentimental at all, I had a friend who married on the following year and I gave it to her (she had not money). Never regret it!

What on earth is a "trash the dress" photo shoot? I'm so curious!

I didn't have a "real" wedding dress. I wore a skirt and a knit top. I just folded both those up and put them in a drawer in my closet. We saved Brendan's clothes too. We're kind of sentimental, hee hee.

It is so beautiful, you should sell it at a consignment shop so another bride can wear it. I did this once and the shop owner told me how happy the new bride was to find a dress she could afford and that it fit her perfectly, so that made me feel great about it.
My daughter's wedding dress is in a box that the dry cleaner put it in especially for wedding dress storage. She is under the impression that her daugther will wear it. Time will tell on that one.
What in the world is a trash the dress photoshoot?????

Hah!

I accidently gave mine away to the Salvation Army. It's okay. No kids to pass my dress along to. Pictures and memories are fine.

I've kept my Mums's outfit though.

I had a Maggie Sottero dress, too! I still love her designs. I want to sell or give it away, but then I ended up getting it preserved as an heirloom. I don't keep physical things so I still think I'll give it away one day. I'm curious to hear what ideas others have to make use of it. Today is my wedding anniversary so maybe I should wear it again and do that trash-the-dress photo shoot!

I heard about trash-the-dress sessions on the radio and found it amusing! I think I would rather pass it on or consign it so someone will have the chance to afford a beautiful dress. But that's just me. And then there's the cost of having to pay for a photo shoot
My wedding dress is a sari with a simple modern design so I'm pretty sure in a year or two (4 yrs after my wedding) I should be able to wear it to other Indian weddings or similar functions.

That's a lovely dress! I would try to sell it, or the "trash the dress" shoot sounds very intriguing. I like the symbolism

My wedding dress is a knee-length silk shantung from Ann Taylor. I've kept it around because I can definitely wear it as a cocktail/semi-formal dress.

I'm a newbie to this forum (although I've lurked for ages), but I simply had to respond to this post. Five years ago I donated my dress to Making Memories, (http://makingmemories.org/index.html ) an organization which grants wishes to women with terminal breast cancer. Their Brides Against Breast Cancer program raises money by reselling donated new and used wedding gowns, veils, slips, etc. "Dated" gowns are recycled into quilted artwork. My gown was a boxed albatross (1986 edition) on a shelf in my closet for many years. You can imagine. One day reality struck: I had pictures, I had the marriage, I didn't need the dress. It wouldn't be in style when my daughters married, nor would it fit them. (My then-nine year old couldn't zip it past her ribs). I sent it off, got a tax deduction and have no regrets.

I am very lucky to have many photographer friends who beg their friends to pose for a trash the dress shoot.
I do like the idea of donating it for a cause, that could be very meaningful.

I'm hoping to have the material from my wedding dress made into two Christening gowns for my two daughters. I wore a very pale pink satin column dress.

I purchased an AMAZING Vera Wang wedding dress on EBAY for my wedding, spent a little money on alternations and cleaning when I got it-- wore it, and sold it again on EBAY when I was finished and actually made money on my dress! I figured, I hope my (future) daughter has enough style of her own to want her own dress one day, not my hand me down.

Hmm, I bought a vintage dress from the 60s for a few hundred dollars at a thrift store, and my MIL updated the sleeves so it would fit. Then I had it archived and it's been sitting in a box in my basement ever since. Hey, I'll bet it would fit again! I was about this size when we got married...13 years ago.

I've been married for almost 13 years too, Kristen. I wish I could get married all over again – to my same Greg of course. I just loved designing my dress and having it made. It was such fun! I went vintage with pearls and disco shoes. And I would do that again next time round.

R&J, I love how your wedding dress will be used. Not sure what I’d do with my wedding dress if I still had it. I'd probbably donate it. So I guess it ended up in the right place after all.

I had mine made- using appliques and beading form my mom's dress. I also wore her veil. I had it packed for storage at the dry cleaners like San's daughter. It's probably too big for me now, but I keep thinking that I should break it out and see. I doubt that my daughter will want to wear my dress (it's ballet length since I had to walk up a cement path on an incline at the ceremony), but if she wants to recyle the dress or use the appliques, veil or fabric (I still have extra)- they are hers.
