A white button-down shirt is what they tell you to get--a starting point for building a wardrobe. I had it in the back of my mind for a long time, but one day I saw a killer sale on an Oxford blue one in a sumptuous fabric. I bought it, and it served me well for a long time. I liked that color--I knew it was classic in offices, classrooms, etc.
I am slowly learning, and I think it has been mentioned on YLF, that you can be a bit flexible about neutral colors--maybe you can get the brown instead of the black. Maybe you can mix metals. Maybe you can have a subtle pattern instead of black.
This dress shirt experience was just that. And just now I was watching a YouTube video, Audrey Coyne, where she mentions all different kinds of color options for this classic, and when she said navy, that really captured my imagination. I am in the market for a new one, so maybe navy.
What color is your ideal button-down? Is it white, or something else?
