What are girlfriend jeans?

I am starting to think about denim for the fall, and saw the girlfriend jeans on the Gap website. Are they exclusive to the Gap, or is this a newish style in general? Can someone explain the fit differences and how to style them? At first glance, they look like slim boyfriends, of which I have plenty.

I think it's just their made-up name for boyfriends that aren't so boyfriend-y. The girlfriends have a shorter rise, slimmer leg and less slouch. Boyfriend jeans are too extreme for some people who can't deal with their inherently non-figure-flatteringness, so they call them girlfriend because the idea is there but the extremes are toned down.

Puppycat is exactly right. I have both styles from the Gap. The BF are much slouchier. The GFs are slimmer and more tapered but still not tight. I can pull my BF on and off without a belt but need to unbutton/unzip in order to get the GF jeans off. The waist is still a little oversized but nothing like the BFs. I wear them the same way I do BFs. (It sounds like your slim BF might be the same animal.)

They are a slim BF or in my case a slouchy skinny. (On someone with a straighter figure they'd be more bf-ish.). They do grow a bit on me over the day. (The pic is straight out of the wash so the tightest they are.)

Hmmm...some websites are calling them a type of Mom Jean, which I am not seeing at all in yours Diana.

Topshop introduced their girlfriend jeans some time ago, they are fitted at the waist, so no dropped crotch, with a slim(ish) leg.

I first saw them at GAP but other brands are doing them as well. I have the light denim ones from GAP and they are super comfy. Relaxed but not oversized like a true boyfriend.

YMMV, but I found the Gap girlfriends unmanageable: too big in the waist. I wear Gap's straight-legs regularly for BFs (sized up, in two different sizes to get two different looks) and none of the FOUR sizes of girlfriends I tried worked.

i got a pair of slimming girlfriends from chicos and love them. they bag out a bit with wear but wash and dry and they are fine. and comfy
