What a good "starter" boot for the boots in skinny jeans look?

I'm a MOTG living in the snowy north. I just had a baby last year and I'm trying to upgrade my look a little. So...I have a cute pair of super dark skinny jeans from Gap, some tunic length shirts and boyfriend cardis, but I'm totally stumped on boots to go with. I'd like to invest in a nice pair of casual, flat heeled boots. Should I go with brown or black? My hair is medium brown with golden brown highlights. Oh and this is important...I'm 40. Any suggestions?

I'd go with brown because weIl, I did! I bought knee high brown riding boots. Hopefully someone coming from the US will give you some specific suggestions

Brown would 'bookend' your look, but do you wear a lot of black? You can't go wrong with a classic riding style boot

I second brown, but not the dark chocolate brown (it actually is not an easy color), more a deep rich cognac or chestnut. I second a flat riding boot, I also had a baby last year and stopped wearing heels... ;). It's not recommended here (haha) but I still wear my Uggs when it's snowy outside and I go for walk, I hate the salt and slush on my leather boots

I suggest a classic style riding boot in either cognac or black. It depends on the colors in your wardrobe as to which color your choose.

Another vote for brown and try weatherproof boot brands like La Canadienne, Sudini and Aquatalia.

I agree with the brown recommendation. You have literally thousands of options for riding-style boots. Once you've figured out your price range and your measurements, start cruising around endless.com and zappos.com and you will be amazed at the selection.

Thanks everyone! My problem is that there is such a HUGE selection. I think I will go with brown riding-style boots. I bought a pair of black tall boots and just didn't care for the look on me at all. It's too severe for me. A very dressy look even though they had a flat, sporty type of sole to them. I've been living in sneakers, flips flops and Dansko clogs for the last 4 years...I think I have to baby step my way back to being more fashionable.
