What’s trending for toppers?

For a couple of years I’ve been leaning heavily into boxy short utility jackets and jean trucker style jackets as my toppers of choice. This summer I’m ‘off’ the silhouette. Possibly the shift from Tomboy to Classic style, accounts for the feeling? I’m also looking to add something modern and possibly trend driven to kick things up.

The chunky V-neck cardigan seems popular, but I’m looking for something more structured? Tailored? Something I can throw over an outfit when temps cool down in the evening or wear when driving around in ‘The Thing’ with the top down. Would a blazer jacket skew too Prep? If not, what are the best dress-casual iterations? What are you using (or considering) as a summer layering piece? What do you think might be trending?

Isn’t too preppy a personal choice? If you like the blazer, go with it!

I can’t speak to what people are actually wearing (I mostly see hoodies and windbreakers), but I like the idea of boxy relaxed blazers, whether short or long. I also have a feeling there’s a safari vibe in the mix, but maybe it’s just my own propensity for brown right now. I keep looking at these two toppers from BR.

A fashion forward brand I sale stalk is featuring long and oversized blazers and summer fabric trenches, like linen.

I don’t know what is trendy I wear a navy linen bomber style jacket from Massimo Dutti (similar to the picture below), below the knee BR cardigan or unlined linen blazer.

Ooh, I like LaPed's suggestion of something with a slight safari vibe. A nod in the direction of Isak Dinesen without being too costumey.

I am likely in the minority, and hardly in tune with what anyone else is wearing... Have you tried heavier shirts as toppers??? I have discovered that I don't like the thickness and weight of most jackets or heavy sweaters when it's over ~62F... YMMV

Wow - Irina - I want all three of your pieces ! I was going to suggest a linen or denim blazer for you Carla . I have plunged into the boxy chunky cardigan myself and am thinking I’ll put them all away until fall . Somehow it feels too much of everything for summer . Club Monaco had always been my go-to for summer jackets - not sure what they have this season though .

I really love Nemosmom's suggestion of shirt-as-topper ... I think this is a current look, and while it can skew casual (e.g. the plaid shirt topper look), I think can look very classic and polished, say with a linen shirt (or your Aritzia dress), or even something a little silkier (almost like a blouse worn a la kimono style).

I have brought out my tan gilet with tie waist that never got wear when I originally bought it but now seems the ticket. Shows a bit of waist. This 1200-year drought/heatwave has been the difference, ahem! … do you require sleeves, Carla? I like a duster in summer…

@ racheylou - sleeves, please! I’m thinking of the topper as a replacement for the kind of jacket in Finds below.

Aside from blazers the three toppers below are the only ones I own.... I struggle with this category too after a couple of fails with light jackets that I thought would be perfect but aren't...

I don't think mine are trending styles at all. I am loosely looking for a new bomber- I watched Behind Her Eyes (excellent) and Louise wore this bomber a few times and I coveted this one. It is a bit too subdued an olive for me (I am better with a warm tone rather than a greyed) otherwise I probably would have bought it.

Long line shackets are trending here. Mid thigh to calf length, button down or belted. Sometimes checked. It’s more structured than a cardi but more casual than a coat. I don’t think I will be dipping into that trend (never say never) but I am feeling like long line is the way to go next (for me).

Long line and oversize blazers. They don't look preppy.

Hoodies and gear-ish styles too.

Chunky cotton sweaters.

By "preppy" do you mean "J Crew" or more "LL Bean" - not to stir up the preppy pot around here.

Boxy long blazers and I think boxy cropped blazers are coming on strong too. Love the idea of a safari jacket for you! Katharine Hepburn vibe!
