What’s the purpose of this on jeans?

The little square pocket on the left, all my jeans have them but I don’t know what purpose it serves nothing fits in it?

That’s the purpose of it!? I don’t think anyone uses those anymore so why keep that as part of the design and not change with current style?

Thank you for all the responses. I had no idea that little pocket had so many uses that changes with the times, and sadly I’ve never used it for anything. I do think I remember hearing the use for coins at some point but always kept mine in a tiny coin pouch or wallet.

I quite like the little pocket but rarely use it and honestly have not thought much about it. It adds a bit of detail.

It's for OB style tampons, aka cotton bullets (no applicator). They fit perfectly

In the 1800s it was for fob pocket watches or Derringer style pistols and these days it's for coins and maybe condoms

Yes, it was for pocket watches, but has now become an integral part of jeans, and the style often looks incomplete without it. Indeed, without the small pocket, they would be FOUR pocket jeans instead of five pocket jeans. And if we're going to eliminate the small pocket, we might as well eliminate the rivets on many jeans, as well, since they're no long made of sturdy enough material to warrant it.

Condoms & tampons aren’t useful?!?!?
I don’t partake myself, but there are some herbs that I believe would be “useful” in a quantity that could fit in that pocket.

It *is* pretty par for the course... that’s how come everyone knew what it was. Can’t think of any other place I’ve worked where people would know. However, we’re a) unusually straight-laced and b) a microplant... not really a restaurant or a kitchen.

Cindysmith, if you want to talk annoying, my Esprit pants will beat a watch pocket every time. When I tried to open the stitching on the back pocket after I brought them home, I found out it is all stitch and no pocket. They faked me out! I still occasionally reach back there to put a hand or my cell phone in the pocket. SMDH.
