Welts are all Wrong!

Welt pockets are my trouser nemesis. Don't misunderstand me, I don't mind them on others, as long as they're well stitched and constructed. But on a curvy backside, they are heinous --- particularly when I walk. It's like plastering wiggling Groucho eyebrows on my butt.

As Angie says, "Next!" Anyone finding great trousers without these pockets?

I do like some pockets on the butt, but I'm with you--I don't find the welt ones nearly as flattering as I once imagined they were. Something about that tiny, thin line across a vast expanse of hilly terrain. . . . Jeans pockets are my favorite, but jeans--and the jean look--are not appropriate for every situation, are they?
I'm no help. Just had to respond, because I was laughing so much at your description.

I had to look up welt pocket to see what it was. The groucho marx comment was pretty funny but it can be frustrating when most pants have a feature that doesn't work for you. I like flap pockets but that is because I have a super flat bum and it looks pretty sad in most pants/jeans.

Is that the kind of pocket where you just have kind of a seam and the pocket is internal? I hate those! I'm more treble than bass but I don't think they are good on anyone. They are impossible to iron and the pocket itself is bumpy no matter what. I've had a tailor remove the pocket and sew it shut but it still leaves a lump and a bunch of wrinkles. Yuck!

I'm laughing but I feel you. I have a very well-loved pair of old black skinny jeans that have these and they are my lounge pants. With age the white pocket lining has developed a tendency to turn inside out and poke out through the welt slit when I put them on. If I forget to check before walking the cats, I'm basically hanging out in my front yard with butt ears. I keep meaning to sew them up....

What shape and color of trousers are you looking for? Work or casual?

Peri: Yes, you are correct --- many welt pockets aren't even functioning -- meaning they have no pocket lining. Except for the one's that Rabbit's talking about.

Rabbit: I can see them now --- butt ears! For summer I have white dressy straight leg jeans, white denim crops, bf and skinny jeans, black skinnies, and black track style pants. I also have bf shorts in white and faded denim. I'm thinking about culottes, and/or tailored trousers that are smart casual. Must be washable!

Most dress triuser have those. May be another reason why I find light- colored dress pants problematic. More " wiggle room " in black.

I wish I had a "bubble butt" as I affectionately call the nice round rears the rest of my family have and then I wouldn't need Groucho Marks eyebrows peering out my backside! I'm in the flat bum club and need the welts, so sorry for your dilemna. (A bubble butt with Groucho Marks eyebrows, I will never forget this, ever! )

Unfrumped: Black fabrics are often more forgiving --- with the pocket detail blending in more.

Staysfit: This forum has taught me that the silhouettes, fits or details that make one member run away can flatter another and earn an honored place in the closet!

I don't have much of a rear and I like any kind of pocket on the back of a pair of pants...but I do understand how some might not like them.

Lol at your description.

I have a complicated relationship with rear pockets. The combination of wide hips/saddlebags and a flattish booty mean that I can look simultaneously wide and flat. Many styles of pockets really don't help at all. I mostly solve the problem by avoiding my own rear view, which is admittedly pretty easy.

Forum feedback reassures me that I'm not alone! In my shopping, I'm finding that many trousers without welts sometimes have no zipper, either --- more like a pullup pant or legging. I'd like more structure, and tuckability, in my trousers, so I'm still looking about!

It's interesting how many women say they LIKE the back pockets, though. I never would have thought it. (I don't mind pockets myself at all, but that wasn't always the case; I don't know if I am less self-conscious or more oblivious these days...)

Suz --- I think the welt pockets must be really a nod to menswear -- a place for that wallet. God forbid I should add a wallet to the mix!

Dear Angie: Thanks for your "uplifting" comment. I really don't mind my backside, and I think welt pockets might work for on, say, some drapey Kate Hepburn style trousers. That item is my HEWI for sure!

Bad welts! Bad welts!

I'm gonna have to walk around and say that all day. I have no butt, but I do it hate it when the pocket outline shows. Lot of pants do that IMO.

As another buttless wonder i need some rear-view detail to add shape and interest, but wish there was a law against those welts which have no actual pocket lining, what is the point?!
