Wedding on Friday and my outfit fell through! Help!!

Hi, everyone! I am at a total loss, I had had an outfit picked out months in advance for my cousins' wedding but I realized there's no way I can wear it. It was a long dress that I was going to wear with booties, but it is supposed to be literally 30-40 degrees Friday (and I'm pretty sure the ceremony is outside) and also the booties look ridiculous with it! The wedding itself is very casual, outdoor/barn style, it's like jeans and nice shirt type of thing. I just don't know what to wear! I already bought the dress, that I can't take back, and really don't want to spend more money on a whole other outfit. If anyone has any recommendations, that would be amazing! I don't know if a cardigan would be appropriate, and I have no clue what to wear under it! Thanks so much in advance!

We have members on both continents, so 30-40 degrees could be cold or hot, but I assume since you mention a cardigan that it's going to be cold. And you'd rather wear your long dress if possible rather than the jeans and nice shirt that others will be wearing--is that right?

Can you describe or post a photo of your dress? We can make better suggestions if we know what we're dealing with.

Do you have other shoe options for the dress? If not, the dress is likely "out" right? In that case, what dressy tops do you have that could be worn way with jeans and the booties and some fun jewelry?

Very first thing, I would confirm that the wedding will be outdoors.

Does your dress have sleeves? Can you wear a silk top under it? Or any other layer? How about leggings? Do you have knee high boots you can wear with it? How about a coat? Sweater? Long sweater vest or gillet?
Scarf? Poncho?

It would definitely help to have a better idea of the style of the dress.

Another idea would be to google your type of dress and see how others have styled them. Maybe someone else has added layers for warmth.

Try taking pictures of your options and think, if someone else was wearing this, would I think it works fine? Sometimes we hold ourselves to higher standards than others.

If you can easily put together the type of outset textstyle mentioned, I would do that so you know you have an outfit that works. And then work on seeing if you can make the dress work.

You still have time before Friday and once you find shoes for the dress you'll have a nice outfit to wear to a different future occasion!

For the wedding, if it's very casual, I'd wear my nicest casual outfit making sure that every item is newish, immaculate, ironed, and that I feel attractive wearing it, including my jacket and accessories. And extra care with hair and makeup.

Casual, but shining.

Would your dress work with tights, a knit shawl and some knee high boots? Hard to tell without a picture of it.

You could also try getting some Uniqlo heattech layers (if you live near one), or silk base layers from Amazon.

You need a blanket-y shawl. Is it a sleeveless dress? I'm of the opinion that if people are having a very casual barn wedding (there are some lovely fancy barn weddings) you don't have to obsess about how stylish you are.

Without seeing your dress, I'm wondering if there's a purchase you can make that would "rescue" the dress and also work with your wardrobe in general. Another pair of booties/tall boots or a dressy long cardigan or shawl.

I went to a very dressy outdoor barn wedding this time last year, so if you're not sure, I would err on the side of dressing up and maybe take a jean jacket in the car in case you need to tone it down.

Boots are perfect for a barn wedding - you can add tights and socks if needed. Can you switch to a different dress that works with the booties?

denim jacket over the dress. tights or leggings under the dress. uggs or something ugg like for outside ceremony. assuming the actual party is indoors, and for that i'd switch to what ever shoes you think work with the dress

Assuming that you mean 30-40 degrees fahrenheit, I don't think a cardigan is going to do the job! That would be full-on wool coat weather for me--especially if you are going to be seated or standing around for any length of time. But, probably there will be indoor accommodations for the reception where it will be warm and welcoming? I second the suggestion made by others to find out a little more about the location and how/where you will be spending time.

If it will be truly casual, I like Isabel's advice: "casual but shining".
