Wedding guest attire/what's appropriate

I'm really struggling with what to wear to an upcoming wedding, it's semi formal attire. I haven't been to a wedding in 9 years! When I went there were all these rules on what you can and can't wear and it's frustrating. So, I recently purchased this skirt... http://www.missholly.com.au/jordana-sequin-skirt. And am wondering if it's wedding appropriate. I don't have a top yet but was thinking maybe a lavender top so it's not white but still matches? I'm not comfortable showing a bunch of skin so I'm not wearing a crop top that's super short or has a lot of cleavage. I'm at a loss, what's ok and what's not? Should I scrap the skirt and get something else? Would lavender with it or should I find a black top?

It will probably be easier to get a dress, than style this skirt.

A light v-neck blouse or 3 1/4 lent sleeve . Cream or beige color simple jewelry.

I agree with Angie..that skirt is gorgeous but it looks kind of tropical/casual and not just because the model is standing on a beach. Could be tough to try to make it more "semi-formal"...

Love this skirt, will it be a beach wedding? Even if not, a simple bodycon or stretchy black tee/top would do for it-no jewelery(may be a cuff or just earings?) and some tan shoes:-).

It's a beautiful skirt! It will be difficult to pull off something very conservative on the top, can you out it on and show us how you look in it? It's very different to find something for a supermodel to wear than a real woman. On the model I can see a pretty body-con tank in a soft beigy nude or a crop top but no idea if that would work for you.

If I absolutely had to wear this dkirt, I would try to wear it as a dress, having the opening seven up and wearing the waist over the bust. Even then, it would be questionable for a wedding. A dress is probably the best solution. You could buy one for what it would cost to try to make the skirt work.

kb04 -- I think one thing that the advice on this thread speaks to is the idea that at a wedding, it's always the bride who's supposed to take center stage.

This skirt (beautiful, BTW!) has so much drama and glamour to it (the length! the fullness! the sparkle! the open front!) that if you match the "tone" of the skirt to what you wear on top, you will almost certainly out-glitz the bride.

And if you tone down the high drama/glamour by doing a high-low pairing like a plain fitted tee on top, you'd be too casual for a semi-formal wedding.

So go for a dress. Not floor length. Slightly glitzy but not drop-dead red-carpet glitzy. You may find it most easily by searching "cocktail dress" and then eliminating anything that looks more like clubwear.

How about a really simple but beautifully cut dress in your best colour that you could dress up with shoes and accessories and could wear again? Is a hat appropriate or would you not wear one? I too am looking for an outfit for a wedding at the end of August. I have a beautiful purple dress but I can't decide if it's too evening wear if you know what I mean.

Gorgeous skirt but for all the reasons listed above I would go with a dress. It is hard to style for a wedding. It would be great with a simple T for another occasion.

Not semi-formal it's too casual unless you were going to a beach wedding. Try a business casual dress or knee length pencil skirt and blouse.
