Weather Treating Leather Boots

I am about to treat my Veronica Slouch Frye boots with the Frye conditioning cream that's recommended for the boot. This one: http://www.zappos.com/frye-lea.....-cream-n-a But I'm afraid. The slouchy leather seems vulnerable to a huge color shift.

My boots are the taupe color http://www.zappos.com/frye-ver.....full-grain, so they are light to begin with. I'm not afraid of a darker colored boot since it will mean it's protected, but.... I am afraid to start. I need confirmation to charge forth.

Umm - - hopefully I am not beginning my stint as an annoying captain obvious but that is conditioner, not waterproofer. It will add some protection, but if you actually want something that will keep you dry you might want to try dubbin, mink oil, or silicone spray. You know that, right? and I am just bugging you? I had to check.

Thank you, Elly. Yes, I know this is not a waterproofing product. The product description says it:

"Conditions, weather proofs and restores. Does not water proof."

I only want to protect my boots in case it gets a little water on it, like it I get caught out in the rain and they get a bit wet before I can duck for cover..... or walking through damp grass.

Spot test. See if it changes color in an inconspicuous spot like inside the boot. If it does, take them to a cobbler and seek advice.

Oh good-- just making sure! Frye's are like saddles-- they need moisturizer (aka leather conditioner).

I hope I'm not being a boot care pest, but I have a new question.......

Why can't distressed leather be conditioned with a regular leather conditioner?

I have a very similar leather conditioner that I used on my Frye Rorys. I did a spot test inside on the leather, and though it changed color initially, it dried uniformly. I didn't have a problem when I conditioned the full boot.

Depends on the distressing--- a rough-out boot or one with an oil finish (with the more matte dull finish) shouldn't have a more creamy/waxy conditioner or polish put on it because it will change the look of the leather. A regular leather boot with "faux" distressing should be fine with a regular conditioner. I think the problem is that any conditioner makes a boot look newer and in better condition-- which may be something you want to avoid if you were going for very RATE.
