Wearing skirts and dresses around little kids....

I finally understand why I tend to steer away from wearing skirts and dresses. I live in fear of flashing someone. I wore a skirt yesterday to a birthday party that my 3 year was invited to. I figured I was probably safe because I wouldn't have my toddler with me. Not so, I ended up sitting on the grass watching the child open presents and eating dinner, not so comfy in a skirt. Then, I had to squat down several times to help my 3 year old with something. And then, this is the worst, my 3 year old decided she needed to pull up my skirt! Glad I was wearing basic black panties. All in all, I was too aware of what I was wearing at the party.

Sigh. I guess I should put away the cool summer dresses and skirts until my littles are older. How do other moms of young children wear dresses and skirts without flashing someone?

I just hardly wore skirts or dresses in summer... It was difficult to find a nice dress with nursing acces anyway. At the time there were hardly dresses suitable for my body shape anyways. I am making up for it now

I take care of many children at the moment but have none of my own. I feel comfortable wearing skirts /dresses around them as long as I'm not doing something very active. My skirt has gone up a few times too but nothing major so I just get over it quickly (happened in the church hall too. ;D hahaa hee hee ooops). Most people did not react at all. Anyone who doesn't understand that children sometimes do that have their own issues. I think it has to do with challenging your own perception as much as it has to do with others' reactions. I definitely am not comfortable flashing my extra 60-pound pear shape right now, but I brushed it off quickly when it has happened.
I think skirts are very comfortable but they require a little getting used to -- I wear them in hot summer weather instead of shorts (I don't do shorts). It helps to know that you are wearing good undergarments as you have said. I sometimes wear longer style shorts-undies to feel more covered.
I have a friend who is very traditional who has 4 young kids, and she never wears pants at all. She does everything, including hiking, in longer-style skirts. I know several people who do that as well.
With skirts, wear them on occasion to get used to them, but keep your pants for more active days. Nobody says you have to wear them, but I think you will find them a nice option to have.

Thanks Heleen and Rosee. Maybe I should try maxi skirts and dresses. I think I'm tall enough to wear one and they look wicked comfy. A full one would allow me to sit cross-legged with a child on my lap, which I do frequently every.single.day.

Cileena, how about bike shorts or very cropped leggings under your skirt?

By the way, winters were easier as I would wear dark cotton or wool tights and fabrics of winter dresses and winters skirts are heavier.

When my kids were toddlers/preschoolers, I wore skorts, and I think some shorts under dresses and skirts. Bike shorts and capri length leggings are great ideas too.

To me the critical issue is having dresses or skirts that were not straight and so could go over my knees if I needed to sit down.

I have a toddler and am totally confortable wearing skirts and dresses for activities that don't require too much exercise. As Rosee was saying you must adjust your way of thinking and knowing that sometimes you will show a little more leg than you wish but in most cases you are the one that notices it more.
I wore mainly pants for many years and realise that (even without children around) I didn't know how to sit, bend or sometimes even walk graciously with a skirt/dress because I was so used to the coverage of pants.It took some trainning but I was determined that the fact that I have a child prevent me from wearing what I wanted.

Short leggings under dresses are great and stylish and I tend to think that skirts with a bit more volume are easier to work with when you don't want to flash someone.

Have you tried pettipants? I've seen several bloggers using them - more modest and probably less fussy than a slip. I've been meaning to try them.

Hmm, interesting solutions. Thanks everyone! I think it would feel strange to wear any type of shorts under dresses, but I'll have to try it.

I am a recent convert to skirts and dresses and I love wearing them especially in the hot weather.I have two kids 3 and 1 and I spend most days sitting down with them or holding one on my hip and running after other.Patience once suggested sitting on my knees when wearing a pencil skirt and that has helped a lot.l prefer skirts and midis which are a-line coz the fitted ones dont give much room for the kids to sit in my lap and if there is too much fabric then there is a high probability of flashing.I wear boyshorts underwear and it makes me feel covered.I also wear 3/4th leggings under above-the-knee skirts.They are times when both the kids need my attention and so they will pull my dress/skirt but I tell them that its not ok to pull my clothes and gently pull it out of their hands.I hope these tips will help.

I have to laugh b/c I just recently had a little "flashing" incident myself when out with my daughter. I didn't give it a second thought and used the incident to do a little training about not lifting up Mommy's skirt. We're teaching her the concept of modesty in skirts & dresses, so it was good reinforcement.

My friend has a 5 yr old daughter and I definitely wear skirts + dresses near her. If she tried to "flash" me; I would say her father put her up to it. Tisk tisk
