WDYT: shoe dye/cream

Diana has me thinking about changing the color of my red boots. I already went to the trouble of having the heels shortened and even though they were more comfortable, I didn't wear them much. The red seemed a little out of my comfort zone. What do you think the metallic cream would do to these? Am I better off using a dye for a more opaque color?

I'd love to hear your thoughts if you have time.

ETA: Kind of hankering for a silver-ish color but open to ideas. I don't know if the bronze hardware is going to be problematic. Gold or antique gold?

As I was saying, I don't have experience with the metallic cream, but I do wonder if the silver is the right finish to put next to the bronze. Do you have a silver-ish piece you could hold next to it to see if it harmonizes?

If you aren't wearing the boots much anyway, this seems like a good opportunity to experiment with a makeover.

Thanks, Susan. I hate when I press the wrong button too. I think you are right though. Now I'm considering burgundy. Black would probably work well for me too but it sounds so boring when there are so many pretty colors to choose from!

OOOH, Burgundy! It would be right on trend, and an easier dye job, to boot (sorry about the pun).

I've used opaque shoe paint and it gives an even finish which is fine and good on a shoe where there is not a lot of leather. For this job I think you'd be better off with the cream. Your red boots appear to have an attractive patina and I think, from what I saw from Diana's post, that thecream will preserve that. I think paint on such a big expanse of leather would obliterate the subtleties of the patina and be OTT.

Good point, Lantana. I haven't done any shoe dyeing--this is exactly the kind of feedback I need. Thank you. I will have to look at the metallic creams again and see which might work best with the hardware.

Penny (Lantana) is exactly right. This is a point I find hard to articulate, and she's done a beautiful job. A burgundy cream would be a perfect choice over red boots, as you'd only be darkening the color, not changing it completely. And the beautiful leather patina would shine through. Sometimes I've dyed leather and it ends up looking like vinyl, but the cream won't do that to your lovely boots.

Ooh, I just saw this thread got revived! I did an inventory and most of my boots are black, with a few dark browns and a smattering of navy, and dark forest green. I have one pair of metallic bronze but can't wear them right now. I love the idea of burgundy but thought that the non-metallic colors were only available in a dye (which is what I thought Penny was describing as something that would hide the patina.) I will look at the Tarrago links again--I'd love to try the burgundy. I'd really hate to loose the subtle patina of the leather. Thanks so much for your help!

Okay, what do you think about bordeaux or burgundy? Do you have a preference? I know layering over the red will affect the color somewhat.

I think you have a plan, just wanted to say I tried the metallic creme on some nude leather shoes and 4 coats later I can't even tell I did anything. Vix has had better luck. I think the burgundy will give a subtle change to the red that could work nicely.
