Watches: Time Pieces or Just Jewelry

This is a spinoff of Sarah's post about a watch from NAS that isn't the most practical for reading the time.

If you are wearing a watch, do you use it to tell time or is it just there for show?

I must confess that even if I'm wearing a watch, I use my cell phone. I'm not sure if it is force of habit, that my cell phone is always accessible, or that my watches don't have any numbers, dots, marks, etc. to quickly read the time at a glance.

What about you? Yay for using a watch to tell time. Nay for I wear a watch, but use other clocks to tell time.

I just don't wear a watch- they bother my wrist for some reason.

I have been wearing a watch since I was 8 years old.

It is a 100% practical necessity (don't tell the time in any other way when I am out and about), that I have made into a fashion statement. My watches, like my specs are my Number #1 accessory - both of which I MUST wear.

I wear the same watch everyday, and use it to tell the time. Like Angie, I've been wearing watches since I was young. At least 10 or 12 years old.

Angie, I've been reading your blog for years, even though I was a silent reader for much of that time. I must say I can't imagine you without specs or a watch, or with long hair for that matter. I don't think I'd recognize you!

Yay. I always wear a watch, I use it to tell time, and I prefer it because I can check the time discretely.

I always wear a watch for the purpose of telling the time *but* I also see it as an accessory so it has to be aesthetically pleasing x

Yes, I wear a watch and use it for the time. I went 10 years or so not wearing a watch (rebelling after quitting work?), but started up again a few year ago.

I now have a small wardrobe of watches (5-6?) because they're also a daily accessory.

I'm lost without a watch to tell time. Using the cell phone means digging it out of my bag, which is usually very inconvenient. Besides, one can usually sneak a peek at a watch without being noticed.

Yay. And I have specifications: It must be a ladies Timex Easy Reader watch with Indiglo. Arabic numerals. Second hand. Calendar. Usually a black band, but I'm trying a brown one now.

I really like wrist watches, but I should wear a pin on one for baking, which I don't.

I do wear a watch almost every day to tell time, and when I am not wearing it I find myself looking at my arm all the time anyway. Both of my watches are of the somewhat impractical type, with small faces and no numbers, but I have a lot of practice using them to tell time!
One of my watches is a small gold rectangular face with a black leather band, very slim, and the other has a midnight blue face/gold detailing with a midnight blue band. They both pretty much go with everything - I don't mind mixing metals though!

I always look at my watch for the time. I've worn a watch every day since I was 11 years old and for the first time had to take the bus to go to school. I needed the watch then to check if I had to run or could walk normally (and naturally to see if lessons were soon over).

A watch is first a practical item, then jewelry. I have to like the look of my watch, but I need to be able to check the time with one glance. Because I wear the watch every day I don't feel it at my wrist anymore, it's an organic thing like my specs. I only ever had one watch at one time. And I never use my cell phone, because the thing is always lost somewhere in my bag.

Edit: I have a slim silver watch from Skagen, with a light and flat design. I have it since 2005, I love it!

I wear a watch 90% of the time, and DO use it to tell time.
My newest watch (which inspired this thread) is not the easiest to tell time with, but I'm okay with that.

I didn't wear a watch for many years until I learned from Angie that having a nice watch and nice glasses can be an important part of my style. Now I love having several pair of fun glasses to switch out and a fine time piece on my arm, and I do use it to read time. It's much easier than finding my cell phone or searching out a clock somewhere, and I love to look at it anyway.

I feel naked without a watch, which I definitely use to tell time. It MUST be functional before we even get into aesthetics. Many years ago I had a Movado knockoff with no numbers, and it drove. me. insane. Never again! LOL

Hm, maybe this is a generational thing, but I only use my phone to tell time. I have picked up several watches over the years, though... but most of the batteries are now long dead, and I still wear 'em!

I've worn a watch since I was 12 and I usually wear one at home even if I'm not going anywhere. It's a lifelong habit. I have 5 or 6 watches now, so I have a choice to go with different outfits. I keep forgetting I can tell time on my cell phone.

Cell phone clock users - y'all don't A) worry about dropping the fragile, one-phone-to-rule-them-all iPhone and B) getting your phone snatched out of your hand?

My iPhone worries me, it does.

LOL, Rachylou. I can hear you talking to the police officer after your iPhone has been snatched: "well sir, I have no idea what time the incident occurred...my phone was gone, of course."

I definitely don't treat my phone as a high-precision device. It goes with me everywhere and gets crammed in everything. Yet it doesn't have a scratch on it. I invested in quality case for it though, just like all my other electronic devices. And I'm not too afraid of someone running off with it as iPhones are very commonplace around here now. Back in 2007 though, I guarded mine like a hawk.

In a related note, almost all of my friends have killed at least one iPhone and Apple has replaced them all gratis. Apple has the best customer service ever.

Because I have collected several beautiful timepieces they are both a watch and jewelry to me...I match them to the color of metal and outfit I am wearing...double duty:)

I want a watch precisely so I don't have to use my cell phone, which is dead half the time anyway. I find it much less obtrusive to check the time on a watch then on my cell phone...it bothers me when others check their phones in front of me - you know they're checking their email, etc as well...seems rude.

Ihave a number of watches and look at them as jewlery, in fact a couple of them have probably never even been set to the correct time. For functional time keeping I use my phone or wall clock. I love watches as an accessory though and have picked up quite a few fun ones.

I've just lately gotten some watches for fashion purposes. I want them to tell time, as well, but one has a bad movement. I got a refund on it and still keep it, and wear it mostly as jewelry. But I don't check my phone for time unless I have to. I'm not a phone person. I keep it with me for safety but I hate talking on it and don't have a text plan, let alone any web stuff. At work in the Pub I rarely wear a watch; I have a big tower clock across the street at Heavenly's Gondola I peek at to see the time, quite honestly.

I wear a watch every day unless I am rushing and forget. I find I look at my wrist over and over on those days. I have a big chunky square Invicta watch with stainless and rose gold trim. I like to wear a bracelet but need the time so this one achieves both. I have a round silver Invicta and a watch with little charms on the chain link band but the square one is the one I wear most.

I love my watch! It's a Skagen men's watch, and though I've had it for about 8 years I still get compliments on it :). I don't carry a phone, so I rely on my watch to actually tell time. Yes, I'm old-fashioned like that...

Watch every day to tell time. When I went out and bought my current watch 2 or so years ago I was looking at all the pretty ones but ended up with boring. It has to be analog, have a second hand and numbers not Roman Numerals.

I've been caught at too many hockey games during intermission not knowing the exact time...and frankly my eyes are getting older...

My watch is definitely the accessory I wear the most often aside from my glasses! Without my glasses, I walk into things (like walls), and no watch makes me late (actually, I still usually am!)

I tried to pick something with a classic style - I've worn it with formal dresses to cut-off jeans and a t-shirt
