I know we've had two watch threads recently; I searched them to see if there was something similar to what I am asking, but had no luck.

I would love to see a picture of your watch on your wrist, and the size of the watch face and the size of your wrist. Any style/shape/size is welcome! I saw Angie's photo of her watch in another thread, and while I am not considering a smart watch, it was still enormously helpful to see the size and how it looks while being worn.

Like a person in a previous thread, I am pondering a "lifetime" watch purchase, so I don't want to go too trendy. Being the age I am, I tend toward smaller watch faces, but I am told that can sometimes look dated? Then again, I have seen 28 mm faces look like 38 mm sizes on some wrists, so wrist size definitely plays a part. I ordered a watch before Christmas, but it just wasn't right for me, so I sent it back and I've been hunting for one ever since. I think I've landed on the right brand for me and (I think) the right style, but it comes in different face sizes.

This is my everyday watch , worn loosely . I don’t care for small faces on watches - for a number of reasons : the least of which is that I can’t read them . How do you like the temperature here in Winnipeg today ? Lol!

This watch, a Citizen Ecodrive, is a couple years old. I love it! I can read the time, and it is solar powered, so I’ll never need a battery ever again. And I love the two tone. For reference, I’m 5’6”. I do have long fingers, though.

Lisa, it is COLD there! Indeed, that air is headed our way, and we are expecting similar temperatures, although only overnight. Daytime temps might get -14C or so! Your point about reading the watch resonates with me, as I have been using cheaters more and more regularly. But I'm more considering the watch for jewelry purposes than function! Is that terrible? Maybe...

JAileen, thank you for the picture! Do you happen to know the size of your wrist and/or the size of the watch? The watch I am considering has a round face, though the case is a little more rectangular than yours. I love the two-tone, and am considering that color combination myself.

My wrist is 6.5 inches. I don’t know the watch’s measurement, but it’s halfway in size between an old Seiko I wore for years, and a man’s Timex that I wore more recently.

I’ve downloaded watch diagrams and IIRC clipped a few to test on my wrist. My wrist is about 5.5” so I always have to remove a link or two or add a hole on leather bands. I try to buy 28mm faces since much bigger can extend beyond my wrist.

I had the same thoughts some years ago and purchased this watch for a big birthday almost 15 years. For reference, it is a 28 mm face, my wrist is 6" .

Though the design hasn't dated much, I am now seriously considering changing it for a variety of reasons, mainly because I am struggling with the size of the face and may replace with a watch with a rectangular face.

I'd suggest to try as many watches as possible and to do some research. I find it frustrating that ladies' watches don't have a good movement, which I would expect from a lifetime watch.

I haven’t worn my watches at all in the past year, which is sad because I have a nice little collection, including one investment piece my husband got me for a birthday years ago (a Hermes with double-wrap leather strap). I’ll try to take some photos today. I have small wrists but am not a small person, so I find a balancing act is necessary.

My wrist measure 6 inches. Two of my watches, the Citizen Eco Drive and the Raymond Weil have 15mm faces, the Skagen watch has a 10mm face. The DKNY watch has a 20mm face. If I were to try anything larger than 20mm I believe it would look to bulky for my frame which is small given my height which is 5’9”. The DKNY watch is almost too big a face but the narrow band makes it work.

The Citizen is my current favorite since it does not require a battery, is two tone, has a second hand and date display. If I could change anything, it would have a narrower band and sleeker profile.

The Raymond Weil is my oldest watch and is truly my all time favorite. The only reason it is not my current favorite is due to its battery requirement. I have had the crystal replaced twice. It is very light and comfortable feeling on my wrist. It has a second hand and date function which are practical features I require for my everyday watch. It has the added bonus of protective ridges on the sides of the adjustment knob. I have ruined a few very expensive watches when that knob snagged on a door frame or some other item and could not be repaired.

I have quite a few watches- a collection so to speak. I haven’t actually worn one in two years although I received an Apple Watch for Xmas and have been wearing it. My wrist is 5.5 inches. I included a few favourites. The last photo is an eco watch which I wore for many years. It was a huge win not to have to change a battery.

Fun thread - enjoying seeing everyone's watches, and hope that it helps to see the photos, Echo. Like you, I prefer classic styles and like smaller watch faces: my two watches are shown here, an Omega (24.4 mm, which my husband and I bought when I made partner) and a Frederique Constant (30 mm, which is more of a statement, and I love the deco style). My wrist is 5.5 inches; height 5'2". Good luck with your watch purchase, Echo!

The people mentioning batteries have me thinking about a mechanical movement. A mechanical movement is generally more sought after for collectors, but there is no question that it isn't as accurate as quartz - not that I need accuracy that much. But I also have heard that mechanical movements tend to need more upkeep or service than quartz, and if a person isn't wearing them daily it can be less good for them.

A friend of mine has a nice watch and says it has only needed two batteries in 8-1/2 years. A good quartz movement will be off by maybe 3 seconds a year while a mechanical can be off by 7 seconds or more per day. I do prefer the smoother movement of a mechanical as opposed to the Jerry motion of a quartz. The style I was considering only comes in quartz. : (

Love seeing all the watches! I'd have a hundred if I could, though it's been a year or more since I've worn any (swelling issues due to kidney disease) but still enjoy looking at them. Have a similar fascination with clocks, especially those made in the 1930's and 40's. Good luck with whichever size you decide upon

I have a lot of watches and a bigger wrist than many here. Mine is slightly over 7 inches. My issue is with a health condition, I periodically have swelling in my forearm and/or hand, so generally, I like a large watch to help minimize the puff! I have a few medium faced ones but generally avoid small faces. Even when not at all puffy, I am not delicate in bone structure.

This is my only watch, an Anne Klein that I bought at Costco not too long ago. My wrist is 5 3/4", and the watch face is 1 1/4". I really just wear it as a bracelet, because my phone is now my go-to for nearly everything. I guess that means I can stop buying batteries for it!

Wrist circumference: 5.5 inches or 14 cm/140 mm.
Pic 1: My most worn watch is the 1995 Pulsar Quartz, has an easy to read second hand and I still count pulses the old fashioned way ( health professional), so it gets worn every day I work. Battery.
Face 20 mm diameter.
Pic 2: The “replacement” for the 1995 one, Maxum brand ( Australian), bought 2017 to have a mixed metal one and a different face. Worn for most social events. Battery. Face 20 by 26 mm.
Not worn for work as much as I thought as the second hand is harder to read.
Pic 3: 2003 Pierre Cardin. Bought on air points ( remember those?) because I liked it. Worn for social events where the colour or style suits the outfit. Battery.
Face 18 by 24 mm.
Pic 4: my mother’s, I don’t know which decade. I like the tiny size of it and the vintage look. Worn for vintage dressing up events. Mechanical movement. Face 18 mm diameter.
You can see they are all quite small. I am 5 feet 1.5 inches I think ( we use cm- I am 156 cm tall) with small bones, small hands and feet.
I enjoy them all!

Not quite sure I measured the faces correctly. Those measurements are pretty much to the outside of the face, the edges of the metal.

I always wear a watch - I find it much more convenient than using my phone which is weird because I always have my phone handy. Anyway, my current watch that I wear all the time is a Skagen Hybrid. It does some smart stuff like count steps but I like that it looks like a regular watch. It is a fairly large face which I wasn't sure I would like but now I do. Makes me feel delicate My wrist is kind of medium compared to others here, I'd say about 6", and the watch is maybe 30mm?

Jenni, I think the "face measurement" includes the bezel, so you're measuring correctly. I'm mostly looking for presence on the wrist, and how different sizes appear on different wearers.

Robin, if that is a 30 mm, it looks positively huge on your wrist compared to similar sizes! This is part of what confuses me. My wrist is 6.5" right now, so not that much bigger than yours, yet I have an old Bulova that measures 32 mm across and it doesn't look nearly as large.

Any advice from anyone regarding mechanical vs quartz movements? The style I was looking at only comes in quartz, but there is a similar style (not sure if the bezel on it rotates, though) in a mechanical. It is more costly to buy the mechanical watch, but I guess I don't know whether it is worth it or not.

I am not sure about mechanical, only my mother’s old vintage watch has that ( if mechanical means it keeps working due to the movement of your wrist)?Since it was inherited from my long deceased mother I have no idea on cost. I’m surprised if mechanical cost more?

Here are my watches.

- The special one — Hermès blue double-wrap strap - face measures 1” across
- Philip Stein double face with black croc band (I have several bands for this, and it was my most worn watch) case measures 1 1/8” across and 1 3/4” tall

- Philip Stein mother of pearl with silver band (another changeable one) 1 1/8” across, 1 1/2” tall

- Skagen grey and rose gold 1 3/8” across

- Olivia Burton rose gold 1 1/4” across

- Rebecca Minkoff black double wrap strap 3/4” across, 1” tall

- small Skagen mixed metal (my dressy option when I want a discreet watch) 3/4” across

- old Davis watch I bought in Switzerland in 1992 1 1/4” across

For reference, my wrist measures 5 5/8” around, and I’m 5’7”.

ETA that I think these photos make the watches look slightly larger than they appear IRL because of the angle of my arm, but I wanted to include the whole hand because I think the proportion in relation to the hand is important to see. As you can tell, I prefer a bit more of a statement size watch. All of these except for the small Skagen would be worn in an everyday kind of way. But during pandemic times I have not worn them at all. Most of the batteries have died.

When I take it off and measure across the back it is more like 35mm. I agree with Janet though, I think the picture makes it look a little bigger than it does in real life.

Janet, that's an amazing collection! I especially adore the Philip Stein watches and the Davis. Watches are so unique and such amazing little pieces of (sometimes very old) technology.

Jenni, it is a good question why mechanical are more costly than quartz. It is likely because more R&D goes into them (it is difficult to fit so many moving pieces into a small case), and also because collectors will pay a premium for them. It is sometimes a hassle to have a battery replaced, and a mechanical never needs that.

I'm still struggling with mechanical vs quartz. If I could get the style I wanted in a mechanical, I'd take it in a heartbeat, but it only comes in quartz. So I keep asking myself whether it is worth getting a similar style, but not the one I had my eye on, with a mechanical movement instead. I'm not even sure where I'd get the battery changed on the quartz watch. Where do people take their watches to replace the battery?

I have five watches in regular rotation and wear one every day. Because of that, I bought a kit off Amazon and buy watch batteries there as well. My husband does the honors. So far, we haven’t had to buy a magnifying light.

I am lucky enough to have a “Watch and Clock Shop” 2 km away. I have been a loyal customer for 3 decades! They change the battery while you wait. The price has been $25 the past 2 years. A couple of decades back it was $10 I remember.

Stunning, Ms Mary! I'm considering the diamond bezel, too. Is yours mechanical or quartz? Or is that a silly question... I know Rolex only makes mechanical, but I think Omega makes both?

Jenni, there used to be a family owned clock shop I frequented, but they closed. My mum bought a grandfather clock during their sale, but without them, I don't know who to trust with a watch or a clock.
