This weekend I snagged a Fossil purse for $5 from a garage sale down the street. It was in good shape, but it had a few spots was in need of TLC. After researching this on YLF (thanks, guys!), I *washed it* on the hand wash setting in my washer on cold with a tablespoon of regular detergent + a few beach towels as a cushion. Dried it for 10 minutes in the drier on warm (with the towels) which completely dried the lining, then placed it in a warm spot with a towel inside. Spots are gone, and after a coat of mink oil (standard stuff), it looks beautiful: clean, lustrous, and nearly perfect.
The karma bit: after the dryer, I felt a lump in an inside pocket. Yep, an old ring set with small rubies that thankfully made it through the whole process intact. Rushed it down to my neighbor--it was an heirloom she thought she'd lost. Made both of our days. Lesson learned: search your stuff really, really well before selling it.
