Was watching Bones last night... (not OT)

and noticed that she (Bones) was wearing a jacket with elbow patches. Thing is, this was an episode from 2008.
I've noticed this with other TV shows. I see things from several seasons ago that are new fashions from this season. Am I that behind the times, or are the costumers in TV that fashion forward? Or has this always been a mainstream fashion on the East Coast?

The costumers might be more fashion forward, depending on the character. I do think the elbow patches look is somewhat mainstream for maybe an East Coast, preppy, Tommy Hilfiger type of crowd (though I'm just wildly speculating because I don't exactly hang with that crowd :).

Speaking of elbow patches and funny timing: My SO and kids are out of town right now, and my daughter just went shopping yesterday with Grandma at Zara and apparently picked up a new shirt with...you guessed it!...elbow patches!

Kim, funny you should mention this. I was watching the last episode of Flash Forward on my Netflix streaming since I missed it when it aired. Gabrielle Union's character was wearing my Wyatt chiffon racerback blouse I got this summer, but in light blue instead of the nude blush I got. Noticed it right away!

I think those elbow patches have always been a little bit geek chic. I love them on professorial types with saddle shoes, not worn in an ironic way. That's Bones' style... like she wouldn't care what was in fashion, she's too geeky cool too care.

I think elbow patches are always a part of academic style- especially on the east coast. I actually think the costumer for Bones does a really good job. I love the way that Bones wears handmade native looking jewelry that she could have picked up on her anthropological journeys, and how Boothe has to wear crazy socks to thumb his nose at the system.

I think patches ebb and flow on the fashion scene. I bought a jacket with self-patches three years ago from Talbots and still wear it.

QM, I have a classic riding tweed jacket from the 80s that has suede elbow patches. It is very fitted and looks fabulous with a turtleneck and jeans. Classic and perfect. Very Ralph Lauren.

I sometimes watch Bones just to check out her wardrobe!

Chewy, I was going to say the same thing about her jewelry. And I am always jealous. I love talismanic looking jewelry!

PS - I think it's funny that they put elbow patches on riding jackets. When I rode in horse shows and fox hunts, none of us had patches on our jackets! I do like the look fashion-wise, however.
