Warm layer under winter coat?

Hi all!

Luckily I've been given a winter coat that I can borrow this winter when I'll be quite heavily pregnant (due in beginning of March if all keeps going well!). I'm so happy about this since I didn't really want to spend money on that. Only thing is, I don't think it's the warmest coat... And winter gets pretty cold here (-20 degrees celsius is not uncommon...) and I'm quite fussy (normally I have a coat that keeps me nice and warm, I love it but won't be able to wear it this year).

So I'm thinking, what could be a good layer under the coat? Something that will keep me warm without being too thick. Would a wool jumper be the best thing? Or fleece? Or something completely different?

All ideas are much welcome!

I vote wool over fleece any day! What kind of coat is it? Will you have much room to layer say a chunky knit, or would it need to be thinner?

Wool layers! I don't own a puffer, nor do I own any fleece. (I actually hate fleece as it makes my hair and clothing super staticky.)

In really cold weather, I'll wear a light-to-medium weight sweater with a tee underneath, plus possibly a blazer on top. A sweater vest is also a good option as three layers of clothing on my arms can get a little sausagey sometimes.

Here's an example from last winter, with and without coat. I have a lightweight cashmere sweater (with a cami underneath), a little silk/wool vest, and a wool blend blazer. Plus jeans and tall boots with wool socks inside.

The gigantic blanket scarf also adds a ton of warmth.

I guess you don't want to spend a ton of money on wool stuff that fits your pregnant self, so maybe have a look at Woolovers - the quality is decent enough. The British wool is the most chunky I think, but the Lambswool is warm too. They have Unisex sizes that might work, or some swingy pullovers and cardigans.

Well, Suz taught me - when I couldn't understand why my puffies didn't keep me warm - about a thermal underlayer, wool sweater, and then the puffy... I'm a California girl, so I know nothing.

For maternity wear, I'd go inexpensive, probably fleece. One point I'd want to mention: when I was pregnant I was always hot, which I think is fairly common, so you might not need a lot of extra warmth.

If you have a wool sweater that will work, I vote that. Otherwise a nice underlayer and a warm blanket or infinity scarf to keep your neck warm.

I always felt very warm when I was pregnant but -20 is not a temperature to play with.
What would you wear underneath your regular coat?
Usually I wear two layers plus big warm scarf.
I would rather wear wool over fleece.

I also ran much hotter than normal when pregnant and had a baby born the first week of March. Could you wear a poncho over the coat plus a warm scarf? Wearing a hat will also help you stay warm all over.

Thanks so much for all your input!

So far the coat is pretty roomy (I can take a picture tonight and show you), but come winter I'm not sure how much space there will be left But another layer should be fine! And yes, many of you make a good point that I'll probably be a lot warmer by then, so maybe it'll be fine? But it's nice to have some options should it be a very cold winter!

I'll probably wear blouses underneath, so an extra layer should be fine, I hope.

Scarf and woolen hat are a must for me!

Maybe tuck a poncho or blanket scarf inside when the coat gets too tight? And I find gloves help almost as much as a hat.

I have a very thin down shirt that zips up and can be worn under a coat.

I am a thermal vest girl during the winter and it works pretty well without adding too much bulk.

I layer vests under my coats when it's super cold. I also find a scarf keeps me pretty warm. I agree with others that I ran hot when I was pregnant.

If you weren't pregnant, i would have suggested a thin, high-quality down puffer coat. If the down is high-quality, you can get the same warmth in a much thinner coat. HOWEVER, you likely don't want to spend money on this.

So I would say 1.: Cotton/cotton-blend undershirts and 2. wool cardigan that's easy to remove with the coat.

I get lots of extra warmth by adding a very thin under layer meant for heat retention, like Uniqlo Heat tech items, which come in turtleneck, crew neck and V neck options. They are very stretchy and I find a variety of sizes can work. Not pricey and they can go under fleece or wool knit wear or a blouse.

What Eliza said. Long underwear makes a big difference. I have the uniqlo heat tech tees and leggings. I wear the tees under my sweater all winter.

Less bulky than anything but the thinnest sweater, and a lot warmer. For me mine extends the temperature range of various coats about 10 degrees celsius.

You might need to leave the bottom buttons unbuttoned of course

Great thoughts! The heattech products sound really interesting, at least leggings under pants (but how does that work when it's not maternity leggings, so they won't cover the tummy? Is it very uncomfortable to have regular ones and just keep them below the tummy?). I think I'd prefer something with a zip so I can easily take it on and off without having to pull it over my head, and unfortunately uniqlo doesn't seem to do that... But maybe an option would be a vest or tees as an undergarment, or the ultra light down west under the coat! Very good ideas.

But... I realised now that Uniqlo doesn't ship to Sweden. But I'll keep a lookout for similar items that I could get here!
