I am afraid this is going to be very long post. I know that this is not everyone cup of tea, but I hope that some of you will appreciate this. I am analytical in nature and love numbers and rules. I have been tracking what I wear everyday for almost 3 years now. Once I had all my wardrobe in the app it takes about 10 seconds every morning during my morning commute to record outfit of the day. Well, I had some free time today and decided to finally use accumulated data and play in my closet. First thing I did was the ruthless culling of everything that I did not wear for one reason or the other. Mostly shopping mistakes from my past - things that did not fit properly, or were wrong style for me but also some older things that I was just tired of. Then I went through things that I did wear but that are starting to look little tired and needs to be replaced.
Finally I started analyzing different categories and tried to come up with the optimum number of items needed for my lifestyle. I live in the apartment and have limited physical space for my wardrobe. I have a walk-in closet that I share with my husband. I also store my coats and linenes in there. I have a shoe closet in the hallway, and drawer unit in my bedroom where I keep my pjs, loungewear, activewear gear and accessories (scarfs, hats, gloves) - one drawer for each category. Everything else needs to fit in the walk-in closet. I don't switch my wardrobe seasonally and everything that I have is visible all the time. We are planning to build coat closet in the hallway, and linen closet in the bathroom but at the moment it is what it is. We moved here arround 3 years ago and lot of things are still work in progress:) So based on my lifestyle, results of tracking and space limitations I came up with the following figures for each category. First figure represent my target number that I calculated as optimal. Second number is my current number after the culling. And third number is maximum number that I should buy each year to keep things fresh and interesting. And then add column for each year with actual number of things that I bought. For most categories I calculated based on 5 years maximum lifespan for each item, but for some categories like sweaters and t-shirts I calculated for less years. So when I reach maximum number per category, every new item should replace existing item. And if I don't want to replace anything I will not buy. I still have some categories that I am over the limit, so more culling is in order. I hope that this will enable me to have good balance, and that will keep me from overbuying in some categories. And help me focus better during the shopping, meaning if I am done with the sweaters shopping for the year to stop looking for them So here it is:

Blouses 5 1 1
Shirts 10 5 2
Coats 10 9 2
Dresses 10 5 2
Jackets 25 23 5
Jeans 10 8 2
Sweaters 40 37 10
Pants 20 15 4
Skirts 5 7 1
T-shirts 10 7 5
Booties 10 5 2
Knee high boots 3 3 1
Loafers 3 3 1
Oxfords 3 1 1
Pumps 10 10 2
Sandals 3 3 1
Sneakers 3 4 1
Handbags 15 11 3
Belts 10 9 2
Hats 5 3 1
Scarfs 15 15 3
Watches 5 6 1
Sunglasses 5 3 1

Based on this calculation I will be buying about 54 new things each year which seems a lot but it is actually my usual trend.
I hope I didn't bore you to tears with my analysis. Those who read it all - thank you. All feedback welcome.
