Ok!!! I need help.

We recently got a fab new tiny apartment and I now have lovely closet space. I was arranging my stuff the other day and I see I have a tiny problem.
I have shelf and shelf but donot know how to arrange my tops.
Here is a photo of all my tops.
My Indian wear and Jackets are in other closet where I can hang them. Hanging my tops is not feasible as it would involve a tonne of hangers and I donot have that much space. So what can I do?

This current way of storing tops by type isn't working for me

Wow I have approximately a tonne of tops. No more buying tops for you missy!!!

What I like to do is, store all the clothes I rarely wear (and that includes most of my Indian wear) in the shelves. That way, I have the clothes that I do wear hanging in front of me.

I'd suggest keep some of the tops you wear to work/ on a daily basis hanging in your closet, and the rest + ones you don't wear that often on your shelf.

And then, switch it every couple of weeks, so that you can actually wear your many. many tops.

I used to store them that way (once upon a time!) and only the tops on the top got worn the most! I would still suggest arranging them on hangers as its so much easier to shuffle and find the right top. May be the tops in a particular capsule (season/work etc) can go up on hangers? And the rest could be arranged on shelves and refreshed whenever the need be?

Ramya, congratulations on getting YOUR place.

You'll wear only what you see, trust me. Hanging is the way to go if you want to see your tops. To save space, I use pull-out rings from the cans until I find one of those clever systems that you can hang 5 hangers on, then collapse.

But, my long term strategy is - minimise, simplify choices Just a thought. And no more tops shopping for you missy!

Ornella has an awesome idea!!

You could also purchase some shelving to go on the shelves. it gives you more places to stack sweaters etc and allows them to breathe.

If you can hang pieces, though, that is the way to go.

And congratualtions on your new place!

I arrange my folded tops by colour and then when I am putting together an outfit I can look through the options in the colour range I want. Looks pretty too!

You new apartment (with closet space!) sounds wonderful, congrats!

I agree that you might consider hanging at least some of your tops. Could you choose a capsule using 10 of them and then rotate them out every two weeks? It looks like your shelves are at floor level (as opposed to eye level), which will make it even harder for you to search through them.

Option 1:
It looks like those shelves are removable. Can you remove them and then install a hanging bar in that area?

Option 2:
Get a chest of drawers and then get divider things for those drawers. I use a Malm dresser from Ikea and these black zippered divider boxes that fit into them. I have a folded stack of t-shirts/tops/cardigans in each box.

Option 3:
If you can't alter the shelving or get a dresser, just get baskets/lightweight boxes that can go on the shelves. Roll up your t-shirts/tops into lozenges and arrange them in boxes/baskets so the ends stick up. It is much easier to pull out and sort through an individual box/basket.

THose shelves would probably fit the ikea drawers, are they about 100 wide? Do you have Ikea there? The drawers rails mount in the inside of the cabinet and make life much easier for getting to things in the back.

Ornella I promise to minimize:) snd start collecting those can things for multiple hanger:thistle :hmmm gold sweaters . Lets see what I can see.
Claire and Neha ; I think I will make capsules. Would rotate my clothes too:)
Sylvia and Jayne: not sure if I can get drawers but I can get those zipper dividers. It's a start:)
Mia sorting by colour is another thing; ) what do you do about pattern:)

Plastic hangers like the ones stores use for pants/skirts and shirts/dresses have holes in the neck where the wire comes out. I've found that I can stick another hanger wire through that hole in order to stack them. I also bought a package of those skinny nonslip hangers that stack. So now I'm telling myself that I don't have too many clothes cuz they all fit in a closet without being crammed and crowded!

I would roll them, and pull everything you wear often toward the front. Dividers, or drawers that can pull out, are also great ideas for the space.

Researching internet options for closet organizations taught me about storing non-button shirts by "filing" them and putting them in a box with sides as high as the folded shirts. They go in perpendicular (like a hanging file), and sorting them by sleeve length and color could help you see what you have. This is particularly good with tee shirts. The secret is to learn the consistent way to fold them (not hard). This could take care of some of the ones you are not able to hang.

Ramya, I've been thinking about this one

Are all these tops wrinkly, or they can resist some scrunching? You can buy boxes and put a sort of grid dividers in them (you can even make those yourself), and than maybe fold inside those small compartments those tops which will not wrinkle. Just a thought.

Aaa that's a good point Ornella. Most of my tops are pretty wrinkle resistant. I can do that and keep those button down shirts seperate. What say?
