Wardrobe Makeover-Essentials - YouLookFab Forum

I've been reading up and rereading and playing catch up with all the advice here. After a long break from any thoughts of style, while focus went elsewhere, I'm determined to makeover my extremely tired wardrobe. Trying very hard not to rush things (I'd like it all replaced today!). since this isn't the dominant season for Austin. I'm 65 now, with silver hair and a casual lifestyle with occasional artsy outings. Most days I'm in front of an easel covered in paint, which is wonderful because it allows me to be here for my son.

A question: where do you find nicer long-sleeved tees? The ones I've ordered are all going back BR factory was too casual, unrefined. Lands End was huge on me (even the small).So I'd love to hear if you've found a nicer layering tee, nice enough to be worn on it's own or under jackets or cardigans.. And really, any advice for your most valuable players in a hot climate (with the occasional arctic apocalypse).

My thoughts on this makeover are, first get good layering tees, tanks.and turtlenecks. New white and dk blue jeans. Comfortable fashion sneakers. Denim jackets

Love to hear your ideas and any recommendations on where to shop.

For me it's the J Crew Perfect Fit long sleeve tees. They have a little bit of shape, are made from better fabric than most tees, and for me seem a bit dressier. For a long time JC cut back and only had them in black or white, but last spring they added more colors.

Right now they are available in 13 colors. I go up to an L for these. In some J Crew things I've been an S. I don't like my tees too tight. Most of the time I am an M in tops. I wear them alone all year and layered under sweaters or cardigans in winter.

Thank you MsMaven! You're reminding me that my all time favorite LS tee was from JCrew- I had completely forgotten that. And yay for colors- I have drawers full of black everything and I'm trying to get away from that. I'll try a medium and go from there.

Another vote for Uniqlo. In the past I’ve also had good luck at Target, but haven’t look at them for tees recently…and Talbots, it sounds like you might want to check out the petite collection

No advice on tees, but in the heat I prefer gauzy cotton to tees. Anyhow I agree with the advice above fwiw. Good luck!

Thanks so much, Angie! So good to be here again and I'm determined to head into this next phase of life looking fab. YLF is such an inspiration. And I was going to order a white rayon button down from Uniqlo- I'll add in a LS tee or two. BTW- I found my blue rayon Uniqlo button down perfect for hot weather when you need to look a little nicer. Breezy and light. That over white jeans was about as stylish as I got this summer.

Kkards- appreciate another vote for Uniqlo. I can sometimes find a petite that'll work, but I'm 5"6' and have a verrry long torso, so makes it challenging.

In addition, I’m a fan of Garnet Hill’s Essential Tee. I’ve only purchased the short sleeve version, but there are long sleeve versions too.

This year I really liked my Lands’ End sleeveless cotton button downs for hot/humid summer days. I would call them my MVP’s. No reco’s for long sleeve T’s atm

I wear Everlane's long sleeve cotton knit tops for layering. Glad you're back and spending your day painting sounds lovely.

It somewhat depends on the size of you bust. Mine is small so I fo not fill out many brands. Anything with sleeves is rather new to me. My best are actually rash guards from Lands End swim section in my regular size. Their things run a bit large so the drape is not at s tight. I wear them as regular shirts under jackets. The rest are a mish mash of brands. Talbots does not fit me at all. I am somewhere between a regular and a petite. Just try on, try on, try on, until you find one you like.

I've had the consistently best luck with the Easel top from Seasalt Cornwall (a UK brand with free international shipping over a certain amount). 100% cotton, the neckline isn't too low, the sleeves stay up when you push/ roll them, & available in many colours, both in regular & petite sizes:

At ~5ft3 the petite sleeve length is perfect for me, so you shouldn't have any issues with the regular size at 5'6. It has that perfectly shaped fit that works for both layering under other items but also wearing by itself (it skims but doesn't cling).

Right now it seems the colours are limited, but I've managed to amass a rainbow of them over a year (just missing the brown now - debating if it's a warm enough tone for me). All the colour options have this interesting heathered effect that's subtle but adds a little smart casual depth.

Another vote for Boden long sleeve tees. Also, take a look at Marks & Spencer. Excellent quality and well priced.

Yes! Boden and M&S are great, and the J.Crew tee is fab too.

From my personal experience, J. Crew and Boden make nice tees. Not sure that they still make them, but Ann Taylor used to have nice boatneck tees as well. Another option is Club Monaco, though their tees are a bit pricier.

Oh thanks so much everyone for all these recommendations! I've ordered the Uniqlo but since colors were limited, I'm going to add a JCrew tee to the mix. As much as I'd like to find some fun pieces to add right now, I think getting the essentials first is what I need to do because I'm trying to pin down what my style is, what looks good and what feels like me at this point. YLF is making this fun.This is such a wonderful community.
