Wardrobe Cleaning and Rearranging- Necklaces & Belts

Even after decluttering my wardrobe and donating a large black bin bag of clothes to a charity shop last week, I still had a massive jumble of necklaces which just kept getting tangled and a pile of belts which just kept getting scattered around my bedroom.

I looked at the beautiful jewellery storage unit which Louise bought a few months ago as my first option but that was too expensive with shipping to Ireland. I probably wouldn't have had space for it either. All the doors in my apartments, apart from my walk-in wardrobe door, are classed as fire doors and cannot have shoe or jewellery storage units hung on them, and I have coats hanging on my wardrobe door.

Instead, I decided to put the bare wall in my walk-in wardrobe to good use, and stuck up a combination of cable hooks for my necklaces and tea-towel hooks for my belts along the wall. It works so well... I can see everything that I own, and am more inspired because I can see combinations straight away.

what a nifty solution. what tools did you need to put up the hooks? i'm considering something like that but the wall i want to use is a bit wonky with very thick and uneven plastering. i'm trying to attach hooks without kicking up too much dust onto my clothing.

i've tried over-the-door bars with hooks. that worked pretty well, but i'm out of doors!

I used hooks with removable adhesive backing. I rent my apartment, and I can't hammer or screw anything into the walls.

I recently went through a wardrobe perge and had to find a necklace storage solution too. Mine came in the form of a special hanger. It's a very substantial wooden hanger that's designed primarily for holding ties. It has a variety of slots and hooks that you can thread the ties through so they all hang neatly side by side on one unit. Corey is currently using one for his ties, while mine is housing my necklaces. I simply thread the ends through the slot and fasten the clasp. No fuss, no tangling. Cost? $8 per hanger.

Dawn - thanks so much for sharing this idea! My daughter lives in a dorm room and this would be a perfect way for her to store her necklaces. Now they are in a tangled mess in a dresser drawer. I am going to buy her a bunch of those little hooks and send them back to school with her this weekend - after showing her your pictures of how they are to be used! Very clever!

I love all the neat storage solutions! I do something similar to Michelle with my jewelry - a tie rack - except that this tie rack is intended to screw into the wall. (Since I also rent and am allowed to use nails but not screws, I nailed the tie rack into the wall instead.)

The tie rack is from Bed Bath & Beyond, and is a little over a foot long with two rows of pegs. I opted to hang it in the hallway outside of my bedroom for added decor - my grandma used to hang her jewelry in her hallway so I stole the idea from her, and I love the concept of using beautiful necklaces as artwork.

Oh I love all these suggestions! I'm still looking at a way to store my fabric ties and obi belts, and a tie rack would be the perfect solution!

Unfortunately Alan isn't really into the idea of decorating (full-stop) so I have to restrain my colourful impulses to my walk-in wardrobe and a painting in the living room. Everything else is tasteful beige, cream and black- boring!

I'm actually going to get a lingerie chest this week to use for arranging accessories. I have such a small closet that I need some other place to keep them.

Dawn, I love this! I use the biggest Command hooks for handbags in my closet. The ceiling is high and it helps to be able to use the wasted space:

I want to do something like that but every single wall in my house is brick and those things just don't stick to brick LOL

I'm going to get my brother to get me a piece of timber and put some nails into it for me to hang things on - I'm sure there are enough hooks on the walls for me to hang a few of these on.

Dawn, those adhesive hooks are such a good idea!

I also use a tie rack to hold and display my necklaces and another to organize my belts. My back wall was wide enough to fit a small three shelf cabinet where I store my medium to small purses and clutches. The larger totes I hang on both sides of a soft fabric hanger and cover with a plastic drycleaner bag but leave the bottom open to allow air to circulate.

I LOVE when I see people's closets. It is really helpful to see the direction I want to take my closet in and get ideas. I like the hook idea a lot. So easy to see everything that way.
