Wanted: black pencil skirt that's casual - not 'office like'

I tried a few months ago to get a black pencil skirt and had 2 near misses. One was actually dark navy (and is now Mary K's) and the other is the zipper skirt that's more a mini than a pencil. So . . . I'm on the hunt again.

I guess what I really want is for these two to mate and for me to buy the offspring lol! Should I just wait? Or give a high waist a go? Or overlook (or cut) the little strings at the bottom?

What about a ponte knit skirt? The fabric, to me, makes it look less office like, though I guess it could still be worn to an office.

Yeah, me too. Gap has a nice one that's a little stretchy. I kick myself for not buying it on Black Friday. This skirt could go anywhere. I don't know if it's too long for your taste but I think it would look great on you!

Thanks, I think my zipper skirt is a type of ponte knit already but just a little short After going over to Gap as recommended, though, I went on to Athleta and think I may have found an option. http://athleta.gap.com/browse/.....pid=756419 Still pondering, but it has the casual kind of material I'm looking for (cotton or linen or canvas duck, etc) and at least has an interesting seaming detail. Thanks Kristine for pointing me in the general direction

ETA: I went for it. I had some tops in my Old Navy cart I'd left hanging the other day and they, with the skirt, put me over the free shipping threshold. I had no idea those related retailers let you check out all at once with many brands. Hunh - learn something every day And, my new mantra, I can always return if they don't work out!

Ooh the Athleta one is very nice.

I have a soft cotton jersey pencil skirt. I bought it ages ago but it's quite casual and a bit lighter and stretchier than ponte knit.

I agree with Angie. I have a pencil skirt of black denin and it's lovely, it goes with everything and it has a side zipper (well.. I can't help much because it's from a Portuguese brand..). Hope you can find one similar.

Mo, the only caution I would offer about the Athleta skirt is that black cotton fades fairly quickly.

Ooh, I hadn't even thought about black denim. I already ordered the cotton . . . but I can return it (I'm wearing out that motto lol). I must admit I didn't think of the fading issue. Denim would be a great choice. Maybe I'll end up with both Thanks for the suggestion, Angie and Rute!

Leah, I saw a handful at Gap or Old Navy on my search last night. You might want to go check there.

I got an idea to dye my denim pencil skirt I already own black. I don't much wear it in it's current embodiment so perhaps this would breathe new life into it for me.

Mo, dyeing is a great idea. My experience with dyeing denim to black has worked spectacularly in the past.

I'll go check out Gap, but iirc the Old Navy pencil skirts hit me at an odd length.

Hi, you might like this one, looks much better and less dressy than in this pic, I have one, you can put the waist lower or higher, how you prefer because it stretches. Very good, strong knit cotton fabric, versatile, you can wear it casual and even dressy....
