Want to cut my hair - any suggestions? ETA Pics of the cut at the end!

I'm hopefully back with more time for the forum now in the new year. I'm still on SYC and haven't bought anything except a pair of tights, although I got some winter accessories from Santa (scarf, gloves and a cap). You will get to see them the next time it's cold enough to wear them, I promise.

As for the hair cut, it's really necessary. I haven't had a cut since last summer and the layers look horrible. And I've been quite a bit irritated by it recently, so I thought I would like to go a lot shorter. Definitely over the shoulders, I'm just not sure what to get. One problem is that I don't have a stylist here yet, I'd need to pick one and just hope for the best...

Thoughts? I've added a recent WIW picture for those of you who don't know what my hair looks like. It's a bit longer in the back. I have to say that it looks good here, but I guess it was one of those "good hair" days.

I think you'd look great with a longer curly pixie style, but if that's a step too far, too fast, how about a graduated retro bob with a bit of layering along the side of the face? Think Rita Hayworth at her shortest length, or even Marilyn Monroe... or Renee Zellweger's smoother version of it, if upkeep isn't a challenge.

Thanks Manidipa! I think a longer pixie is too short (for now). I still remember the absolutely awkward year when I started to grow my hair out from a pixie, I think I want to stay a bit longer at the moment. I like the idea of a bob. Layers around the face are great, I loved the look of the shorter strands around my face when I got my last cut. It definitely needs to be a wash and go cut though, I have no patience for a long styling routine and I don't want to start with a flat iron.

Whatever you do, find someone who is good working with curls and who will work with them, as opposed to trying to tame them down. Your red curly hair is so beautiful!

I suggest you keep some length unless you are planning to style your hair ( blowdry or styling tools). The curls you see in most photos are "styled" curls. They are not really from someone who just washed their hair and let it air dry. Defined curls like that need tools and / or styling products.

I would get Mo's haircut. I think that would look fantastic and it is low maintenance.

Thanks Krish! You're right. I stayed with my old stylist in the last years and it was never a big problem because I mostly just had the ends trimmed. But I really need to find one here in Berlin, it's just not practical otherwise. Unfortunately I don't have any curly haired friends I could ask. I was already doing a bit of searching online, but I guess you never know until you try them.

Thanks Zap! You're right of course, these are definitely styled. Although my hair does similar wavy things when I let it air dry, so that's not a problem. Problem is to get it cut just right so that I still have some curl and don't end up with "pyramid" hair, like I call it. I love Mo's hair, but it's a lot longer than mine and some of my length definitely has to go because the ends don't look that good. The longest layer goes just past my shoulder blades, most of it is just over the shoulders. I agree that I need to keep some length though. And stylists often want to cut too much because they don't think about the curl, especially if they cut it wet.

Oh, yes, I know about pyramid hair, my hair is very similar to yours. I always asked for longer layers when I used to wash/air dry.

I love your hair & it works so well with your style. Before you chop it off I would suggest a trim & a treatment. That way you can see if it's just the condition of your hair that is bothering you & you can check out the salon at the same time. You can always cut it later:)

I think Caro's advice is spot on. Start with a good trim and then see how you feel about it.

Thanks Caro and Susie! That's a good idea, especially because that way I can try them without taking such a big risk. I think I'm going to do that. I have the pictures above saved though, maybe I will be needing them later on.

Just called them and wow, that was fast - I have an appointment this evening! I'm going for that trim. Wish me luck!

I totally agree with Caro's suggestion - nothing too drastic yet. Especially since this is a new stylist for you. I would get a good trim, see how he/she works with your hair and then if you're happy with it, you can get a shorter cut later. I do love the cut that Julie linked to and think you would totally rock it!

The stylist was very nice and always asked what I wanted and if it was alright, I liked that. I also think the cut is good, my first impression is positive. She did cut my longest layer quite a bit, which is a good thing. I lost some length, but I like it. Of course she put way too much product in my hair, that's a thing I hate with stylists. Seriously, I'm getting a headache from smelling the stuff right now, I'm going to go and wash my hair after posting the pics. More pics will follow in two hours when my hair is dry again.

Looks good! I hate the amount of product they put in, too. I have straight hair and they also always dry it so it curls under. A little too goodie-two-shoes for my taste, but whatever!

I need to get my hair cut again soon, and I'm wondering if I should go shorter. My hair is curly and about the same length as your new hair cut.

How did they style your hair after the cut? Did you air dry or did they use a curling iron?

Thanks, A.Kiernan! She didn't use a curling iron, just blow dried it hanging down with a diffuser. Maybe I will still go shorter in the future, but I think I like the length for now. I'd love to see some pics if you go for a shorter cut.

Thanks Sara! I think now you can really see a cut, before it just looked grown out. So I think it makes a lot of difference, even if the length isn't that different. I also asked her to cut some strands around the face shorter, I think that always looks better.

They are not totally dry yet, but here's a picture after the wash. It's taken with flash, sorry. So here's what it looks like when I don't work for the curls, it's just washed and air dried without adding any product.
