Waah! Ruptured Achilles

My shoulder is almost fully recovered and today I think I ruptured my Achilles while skateboarding with DD. I'm icing now but there is a big gap where my tendon used to be. Argh! I just want to cry:( Sympathy welcome as I hop around the house. Hope I can get into the orthopedist tomorrow. Wish me luck.

OMG. That is not good. Good luck with seeing that doc tomorrow. Early reattachment (if you choose to go that route) is important.

BTW: another way you can tell is your muscle at the back of your leg is all bunched up.

Oh, Kelly!! I am SO sorry. Nothing worse than an injury on the heels (OMG, did I just SAY that??) of another injury. In all seriousness, I hope the ice does the job and you feel better after a few hours.

Oh, no, Kelly! While it will definitely heal, that is NOT good. Please don't delay in getting it looked at. I've gone through a whole year of dealing with a husband who suffered two achilles ruptures (three months apart). He has been back to normal these past two or three months, but it took forever, and I'm still worried about the integrity of his healing. It's a long road ahead of you, if that's the case, so I hope it isn't. But let's wait and see what the doc says. Please post back soon!

Thanks for all of the sympathy. I have an appointment late morning with my G.P. to get a referral. I'm 99% sure it is ruptured but unsure of the extent. I can't walk on it and am hesitant to try in case I make it worse. Just hopping about and crawling for now. Will report back later. Trying to look on the bright side--that it happened close to home and on my weaker leg. From everything that I've been reading, it sounds like I've got some tough sledding ahead of me.

Oh no Kelly - that's awful! If it's any consolation, I tore my Achilles (among other injuries) in a running accident over two years ago and it DOES heal

Thanks for the sympathy! Unfortunately, it's not something minor. I've got a cast and crutches for now. The Orthopedist is pushing hard to surgery but I've read where other Dr.s recommend a less invasive approach--basically casting it for 6-10 weeks and allowing the tendons to repair themselves. Either way, it's going to be tough sledding. The Dr. quoted re-rupture rates at roughly 2% for surgery and 10-12% for non-operative repair (casting) with normal physical activity. I'm 45 and not planning on taking up any competitive sports so I'm thinking the non-surgical route will be fine. The cast and rehabilitation times are fairly similar. But, the Dr. was so insistent on surgery--it makes me wonder whether I'm making the right decision. Worst case, it doesn't repair or it re-ruptures and I'm back to square one and 10 more weeks lugging around this anchor. Ugh.

Talking out loud here. It's helping me focus. If anyone has achilles repair stories to share, please do!

That's too bad Kelly, I'm sorry. I ruptured my Achilles when I was in school (during sports) and didn't have surgery either. It was a bother to go all those weeks with a cast and crutches, but my doctor wanted to avoid surgery where it wasn't necessary. It's just fine now, although I would say that foot is a tad weaker than the other one now. Best wishes for a good recovery!
