Voluminous Tunic Dress: To Belt or Not To Belt?

Here's a belted voluminous look with un-belted shot to compare. Front view is reasonable, but not the best. The side view shows why (I think) a large bust can be a disadvantage with these type of dresses. The front is visibly higher than the back. I had this effect with numerous dresses in multiple voluminous cuts/styles which lead me to think this way.

What do you think? Am I dong something wrong?

I guess I'm not really seeing what you are seeing. I can see that the front is slightly higher, but that is often the case to accommodate a larger bum (which you do not have). I also don't think that you look super busty either which is probably a good thing, if that's what you're going for. I'm not explaining myself very well.

But I like your look a lot, both belted and unbelted.

You know LoP, I always hear you mention that you have a large bust, and maybe you do, but I really cannot tell that from the pictures you post. You do not look like you have a large bust at all...neither in other outfits, nor in this one. Your bust really does not influence the shape of the tunic. You look very average to me.

I actually prefer it unbelted, or perhaps belted differently. I have always found hip belts hard to wear. In most cases, it seems to just draw attention to the hip area and cut you off. Have you tried belting it at the waist?

I have come to conclude that volume on busty figures (which as I mentioned, I don't really think you have) is just a matter of personal preference. You either like it or you don't. I will concede that my voluminous dresses and tops would look *better* on me if I had a smaller chest, but I don't personally feel they look bad either. I'm sure others would disagree, which is why I didn't end up posting the side view of the blue dress. It's too much of a subjective issue and personal preference and I think we ought to just leave it at that.

LoP, I like it unbelted. I really like this tunic outfit and think you look great.

My vote goes for the unbelted version. I can agree with everything Maya wrote.

This is a case where I prefer the unbelted version. In the photos, your figure looks lean and elongated, so I don't necessarily think the tunic demands a belt. I wouldn't even have guessed that you have issues with a large bust. The placement of the belt seemed a bit low to me too; I suspect your natural waist is higher.

The unbelted version is very cute and breezy. You can pull it off.

I like the unbelted version better, but I think the main problem with the belted version is the placement of the belt. I think this would be great with a belt closer to your natural waist. The belt as it is right now is throwing off the proportions of your body, making your torso look shapeless (since you also lose the nice straight lines of the tunic when you belt) and too long compared to your lower body.

I think this tunic is so pretty and I love it both belted and not. I have always loved the look of hip slung belts. I guess I am from the hip hugger generation, just look how cool Jim Morrison looks in them! HaHa!

Thanks everyone. Honestly I didn't think anyone would like it unbelted so I'm surprised.

Maya: I think your voluminous dresses look wonderful on you. So I hope this post doesn't look like a counter reaction to your recent voluminous posts.

For my busty-ness, I have a DD cup (D on some rare brands), but my style is quite adjusted to making them look average including a religious use of camisoles, cardigans and structured cover-up jackets and vests. I'm also quite tall (5'10'') so I'm big overall (but not big boned) which probably adds to the average look. What a cute tunic! I love the pattern. Like others, I also prefer unbelted, or trying to move the belt up. With the belt as is, the way the tunic poofs out a bit oddly and adds emphasis in an unflattering spot.

I don't think you look overly busty. You seem fairly proportionate for your height!

And hey, clothing twin -- I have that Sweet Pea top, but with a white background and the circley things are in blues, greens, and purples

Not at all LoP! Sorry if I sounded defensive. I just like to draw comparisons I suppose. I don't think you have anything to worry about in terms of wearing volume. You seem to meet all the prerequisites for looking great in it, so I hope you'll begin to embrace how fabulous you look.

I like both looks - both belted and un-belted, but have a slight preference for the un-belted look. You wear the sack dress look well.
