Vogue, Lena Dunham, and Photoshop

Jezebel is taking heat for this, as seen here:

Apparently the controversy is that Jezebel is picking a fight when there's no fight. Photoshop to Lena is minimal. Although honestly if you look at what they did, the fact it really did strike me as sensitive and directed tells you a lot about how we judge photo alterations and our bodies. Lena still looks real - just better.

I am really critical when it comes to Photoshop work -- after all, I did a heck of a lot of it myself for years and years (I barely use it on my own work) -- but I must admit, I found the Lena Dunham shopping job pretty darn tame. I agree with you, she is still recognizable, which I can't say of a lot of stars once their photo makes the cover of a magazine. I love it when all of a sudden their waists are the same circumference as their heads, and their hands have absolutely no creases on them and look like they're made of plastic.

But don't get me started on the people who say that you should NEVER use Photoshop and you're a crap photographer if you do. That is BS.

I didn't read the whole piece, but looking at that first "before and after" photo, it just looks like they fixed the fit of the dress rather than changing anything about Lena herself.

Tailoring takes time, Photoshop is quick.

Lena Dunham is practically a holy icon to Jezebel. Their overreaction does not surprise me. (...it is still an overreaction)
