Vince Sweater, is this red too dark? Plus, my grey hair!!

Sorry for my long absence. My life has been very very busy because I am trying to make up work after my prolonged medical leave back in August. There is always a price to pay for taking time off! I expect I will still be scarce on the forum for another month or two because this is a busy time of year in my professional world.

My red cotton turtleneck is getting frayed and it's time for replacement. It's a perfect match with the darkest shade of red in my color palette, and I'm wearing it in the first picture. The Vince cashmere turtleneck attracted me, but when it arrived, it was definitely darker than expected. Is it too dark for me? What do you think? Should I hold out for something lighter? Will I be able to find another red turtleneck in the correct shade? I obviously wore the red turtleneck frequently, so it would be nice to have another. They make the same turtleneck in off white, which may be too warm toned, plus I have a tunic length winter white cashmere turtle neck from last year that I love and it's still in excellent shape. I also have my eye on a charcoal colored turtle neck, but I am less inclined to get a neutral, although it does have some interest because it has some cables.

OH, and in case anyone was wondering, this is me with my natural hair color! I completely forgot because I haven't posted any pics!! It took three hair cuts to grow out, or 9 weeks total. I'm due for a haircut again in a few days so it's beginning to look a bit shabby to me, and I'm post work out, so I have no eye liner or lip color, etc. It may be hard to tell what I look like in these pics, but this is what I have for now. What do you think? Should I go back to color?

I don't think it's too dark - it's slightly muted compared to the previous one and I think the muted-ness suits your hair colour.

I love the grey hair! I think you look fab in the first pic with the clear red, but the color in the second seems too dark and saturated for your rather delicate coloring. Fall is a hard time to find clear colors - you may have more luck once the real winter items start coming in.

I am very sensitive to colors being too dark on me (I am easily washed out), and I do feel like the new turtleneck is a little too dark for your natural coloring. The old turtleneck seems to have a bit of a pinkish cast to it or something that makes it work better. I don't know how easy it would be to find that shade again...it's always kind of the luck of the draw. But there seems to be a lot of red out there at the moment, so maybe you could keep looking?

I like the natural hair color. You have a natural variegated color, which I like. But I have a short memory for color, so I would probably have to see side-by-side pics to decide whether I prefer it colored or natural.

I like the second color as well.It will look even better once you add eye and lip color. I like the hair as well--lucky you with short hair and can grow it out quickly.

What JAilern said! I don't see " gray" as the defining cokor, I just see softer tones that go with your overall coloring perfectly and I think will be fab with your new color palette, and you can tweak it ( clothing colors) as needed.

Gat red looks too dark and bright for your ideal. That's if you're not doing strong makeup, which I know can extend color palette.

I would hold out for a different red. My own " best" colors have shifted to just a bit softer and I have to remind myself
That unless it's a HEWI in some other
way, I should be patient. I know that good colors have a high happiness and mood effect on me and I'm trying to resist" good enough".
I'll do darker colors for evening wear because there are fewer options and I can do more makeup, but for daily wear I can't maintain a " lippy" if that's what's needed.

Your hair looks wonderful!! I think the colour is very flattering with your skin and eyes.

I tend to say hold out, it is hard when you want an exact colour sometimes I know! The second one is not bad, but the first one is great.

If you usually wear makeup, I would like to see it with, because the issue only seems to be a slight redness around your nose, which probably doesn't show with makeup. fwiw your skin looks glowing and good without makeup.

Also, it's a free country and anybody can wear any color! I'm just putting it in perspective of the palette you've got going, in terms of how strictly it's in that.

I like the second colour on you a lot but I have a sugar eye for dark red. Your hair colour is fab.

I like your natural haircolour so much better! Its's fab! Please keep and I'm with others on holding out for another red. I love the drape on the new Vince, but the colour doesn't work as well to my eye as your current one.

I love the first sweater best, but I think the 2nd one also works -- just maybe not quite as well. Thing is, it might be a while before you find the exact shade, and if we weren't comparing two side by side we would probably be complimenting how you look in the 2nd one also.

Keep your natural color! You are lucky you have short hair making the growout process relatively quick plus yours blends so nicely. I like the color of the sweater but I know I've stopped trying to replace a color with an almost right version because it inevitably bugs me.

Here's my growout by the way. I think we're the same age? High five (or 5-0)...

Una, your hair looks fantastic. I love the way the silver looks! You're correct that we're the same age. Your suggestion is excellent. Why am I looking for the exact same color? I have no particularly good reason other than I really like the original! I wish the bottom edge wasn't shredding.

Suz, how wise you are! Of course comparing the new sweater to an old favorite is a mistake. It's a bit like your favorite blue and white toile linen tee that was ruined in the laundry. (Which I happen to also own and have only posted once because I remember this very well.). You found a beautiful replacement but certainly didn't compare old pics to the new shirt, at least not that I saw.

For everyone who thinks this sweater is too dark, I'm inclined to agree. When I look at the picture, I see more shadows around my chin, and I also see more redness around my nose and I think my face looks a bit grey instead of clear. It's not the correct tone for me. It really isn't excellent, and I am currently only purchasing/keeping items that feel and look excellent. It may be JFE, but that's below my standard for an expensive Vince sweater.

For everyone who thinks I should keep it, is it the color or the collar? I am in love with the style and am debating whether to order the sweater in off white? I just worry it will be too similar in silhouette and color to a Quinn sweater I purchased last year. (I'm on my iPad so I'm not sure I can post the Vince sweater). Would I end up splitting wears if I have two sweaters the same color, both tunic length?

It's always interesting to read about this topic- color saturation-vs. face/personality.
I think your natural hair color is looking great at the moment (salted) and love the sweater's, too!

This said, the blueish-pinkish hue it seems a better shade for you-as has a very little bit of grey and only a little lower saturation than the other---BUT I have no problem with the color of the new one on you, either-you can dress it well-depends on your mood.

I am blonde, and low contrast girl myself, but feel it's OK to add contrast with my clothes to my lack of contrast face and body! Think it's a question of preference and personality.

For those who think strong color wash them out, maintaining the color strength in a column(from head to toe) and dark, thicker frames help, too!:-)

I must be missing something because I don't see any gray at all. Or maybe I need glasses?

I prefer the first turtleneck not only for its color but also for its style which I think is more flattering than the cowl style turtle neckline.

CocoLion, this is most definitely my grey. My natural hair color is a much darker color. It's hard to see in the picture but my grey is a mix of white, platinum, silver and for now my natural brown. I think the brown makes it look blondish in the picture, but in person you can tell it isn't. I'm also more grey in front than towards the back so there is a gradation.

Firstly, your 'natural' hair shade looks fab!!

Secondly, well, I can see that there is a tiny bit more warmth to the colour of the second sweater. The difference in darkness is very slight. You're a Soft Summer aren't you? Perhaps the shade of the first is fractionally more suited, but I still think the second sweater is fab on you too. Not much help am I?? I personally would love the second sweater for myself

I'm late to this, but it's nice to see you again! I think your hair looks great in its natural color, and as your age triplet along with Una, I'm a little jealous of you two that you have such fab natural grey! I remain committed to coloring for now.

I prefer the first red on you. I love the second color, but I find the first one more flattering to your skin tone. However, I realize that this is based on photos with no makeup, and even just a touch of makeup can make a significant difference in how a color looks on you. How do you feel in the second one?

Actually, taking another look at the photos, I think I also prefer the first neckline to the second on you, and that might be coloring my opinion as well. Not everyone wears that close turtleneck style well, but it really suits you.

I think the new one is significantly more flattering and so is your hair color. I much prefer your hair less yellow.

CocoLion, thanks, I just thought my photo looked slightly distorted in color so I wanted to clarify. I guess all photos are unless they are in natural light and taken with a good camera. My cell phone doesn't count as one right!

Style Fan, I wondered about the collar being to big for me? I have a small frame even though I'm tall it seems that anything too thick or heavy looking doesn't work for me. I hoped this wasn't too thick but perhaps it is. I'm jealous of people who can wear big chunky knits! I love how they look, but not on me.

Destri, thanks for saying you like my Pixi cut. It's part of my signature style. I've had short hair since I was in High School.

Isabel, I agree, my hair is less yellow, and it's more flattering. When I had my color typing, the colorist advised that I go for cool blond, platinum and light cool brown mixed in my hair. My hair stylist had a hard time with the recommendation. It turns out that my natural color includes two of the three plus silver which is also on the list.

Janet, I agree that with some makeup this sweater might look better on me. I am toying around with a shopping strategy of having my clothes work well on me without makeup. I wear very little, and have found I'm wearing less now than I did a year ago. I have decreased my use of foundation because I just don't like it. I only use some around my nose if it looks red from rosacea in the morning. I know it will look red by the time I get home regardless of whether I use foundation or not. I must need something with better coverage but my skin is actually pretty good so it seems silly to do that. Then I use a little eye liner, mascara and lip stick or gloss. I don't need really need blush so I rarely use it.

Diane G, yes, I believe the second sweater has more warmth to the color. Maybe too much for me? I was classified as a light summer as opposed to a soft summer. I believe the difference is that soft Summer's can wear more muddied brown tinged tones, light summers can wear pastels which are tinged with white but still a bit muted. http://www.12blueprints.com/kip-is-a-light-summer/ This link explains the coloring of a light summer nicely.

I just noticed the link above has a link at the bottom to light summer gray. My gray is very similar. Very.....well, maybe more brown, but that's my natural color....
