Let me start this by saying I often marveled at how wonderful these pants felt against my body. They were linen and yet never wrinkled. They washed beautifully. The color was fabulous. But as Angie asked they were indeed part of my pre-weight-loss wardrobe. The thing is that when I was editing my closet that fateful weekend, I wanted to salvage at least a couple of pairs of pants. I thought adjusting the elastic was the solution. But Angie is right. The pants are TOO BIG all over. I must have willfully ignored such an obvious flaw. They are gone now.
Thank you for the suggestion of a tailor, Brooklyn, Krishnidoux, Toban, and Kkards. In March when I was editing my closet, I sincerely considered taking the entire lot of pants to the tailor. I took one pair just to get an idea of the cost, the tailor told me it would be like "reconstructing" the entire pair of pants. Literally all three seams would have to be taken in and the pockets would disappear. I love my pockets. Although she did not say it, I strongly suspected that the end result would be disappointing. So I agree with Joy and Toban. It would be like throwing good money after bad. It is better to suck it up and cull ruthlessly (tips hat to Toban).
Gigi -- We are three-diminsional, yet I have always evaluated my clothing from the front. Only from the front. Slaps head. No more. I'l be doing a 360 scan from now on. I am so relieved I discovered this before I built my new wardrobe. BUT I will be trying on my pants and doing a read check nonetheless.
Shevia and Brooklyn -- There are pants that willful blindness is perfectly acceptable, and I think I could have lived with some degree of oversized-ness. It was the gathering and folding of the fabric that freaked me out. I am absolutely certain Shevia's baggy shorts and harem pants do not present that way. Thank goodness, all photographic evidence has been destroyed.
Thank you, Krishnidoux. You salvaged some of my pride this morning.
Thank you, SarahDB, for understanding my impulse to "save" the pants. My Mother was always doing crazy "fixes" like this and as a teenage girl, I lived in horror. Putting those pants in the donation pile was cathartic. Sometimes you really do have to be honest and ruthless. I did learn an important lesson. One I will not forget soon. I also sent my Mother a silent prayer of understanding.
Unfrumped -- I think you have hit upon one of my problems. I like to wear my pants just slightly oversized because I want the "the room," but then they’re baggy on the rear thigh. I too can size down but I have not made peace with the snugness. Although the last two pair of pants I bought are snug. I think I am figuring it out as I go along. I am seriously considering hiring a professional with skills similar to Angie to come and help me review my wardrobe (as it now stands). Srah did this sometime ago and it benefited her greatly. Certainly, it would be both educational and enlightening. I found the name of the professional. She comes highly recommended. I have been timid about calling because I anticipate she would find the vast majority of my wardrobe poorly fitting and that frightens me.
Side note: I bought elastic waist pants for the comfort factor. From now on, I think I'll be buying waisted pants with buttons or zip.
The Cat -- that is an excellent idea. There was literally no covering this diaper bottom. As Angie pointed out, these pants were too big all over. It would be adding volume onto volume and I would be a sloppy mess. It is much better to suck it up and put them in the donate pile.
Waves that MaineLady -- Hope you are well and that summer is glorious.
Joy -- I will be on the lookout for the butt crack on the back view. In fact, every single time I try on any pants from my wardrobe, I'll be doing the full 360 scan. I don't think this is an issue, yet. Then again, I didn't realize I was sporting a diaper bottom either ....
Greyscale -- Your story was amusing. Thank you for sharing. I know you probably felt ridiculous, but I'll bet you looked really cool. I love seeing period ensembles. Although I would not approach a stranger, I would be full of questions about the outfit.
