Velvet trend: Are you loving it or hating it?

I adore velvet, so big thumbs up from me.

I realize that velvet is not everyone's cup of tea, though. Wondering what everyone at YLF thinks of this trend?

I love velvet. Years ago I had a navy velvet jacket that I wore with various dresses. This season I bought a black velvet jacket for a holiday party which it turns out we won't be going to. I guess I'll just start wearing it with jeans.

Thumbs up from me. But I haven't seen much of it in my size, and I'm not shopping much right now. I can't find what I'm looking for. Maybe I have to travel to somewhere colder. Now I'm thinking about buying some fabric and make an infinity scarf.

Two of my very best jackets are velvet, one of which I posted today. So I am all for velvet, and fully on board with this trend.

I love it! I have a new pair of wine colored corduroy jeans that look like velvet unless up close (the corduroy wale is very fine). I'm really enjoying the richness they add to outfits.

I like it on others - mainly as a dressy item, not so much for everyday. Usually it requires special cleaning which I'm not a fan of.

navy blue velvet jacket with a drapey hand but structured fit would probably be as far as i went. velvet pants nap gets crushed between the upper thighs and at the thigh crease too quickly and is unseemly.

I like looking at it and touching it. But generally velvet is not my cup of tea - and I don't want to wear it.

SUEDE is "my velvet". A lighter version. Hence my new "velvet-lite" boots.

I like it but don't own any right now. I find a lot of the current velvets to be kind of cheap and flimsy feeling, kind of more like the velour of yesteryear. Especially on more structured garments like jackets, I don't think it works that well. Real, substantial velvet is hard to find.

Love velvet, but picky about the quality, so only have one piece that I bought a year ago, a black slouchy cropped top with long sleeves in silk velvet.

I picked up a velvet skinny scarf at Club Monaco. Other than that I haven't come across anything that tickles my fancy. Like Angie, I love suede. I have blue suede ankle booties.

I'm loving it. It's my 90s roots showing. I wore a lot of gothy crushed velvet back then...

Funny thing is that I dislike the feel of some synthetics on my skin, so I haven't actually bought much this time around. So far I just have a pair of cotton velvet pants (really more like velveteen). I'm looking for a velvet cami to wear with jeans.

I like it, and I'm glad I kept two old classic velvet blazers from years ago. However, I'm not finding any new velvet items currently at retail that appeal to me -- I would love a simple velvet top or shirt with long sleeves that is not embellished or overly boho, but I'm just not finding it.

To those of you who love the look but find a lot of velvet to have a cheap feel to it -- consider shopping secondhand or thrift stores, if you have the patience.

Old velvet was almost always "real" and not the synthetics of today. I don't know what "real" velvet was made of (silk?) but you'll know it when you feel it, and it will always be lined with heavy satin.

If the size is a little off and you're at, say Goodwill or the Salvation Army, the low price will make the alteration costs completely affordable, and you'll end up with a unique piece.

Loving it! But I get that it isn't everyone's cup of tea. I have some old (real) velvet trousers and want to buy some fun velvet joggers at Zara.

GF, I envy you living in a climate with that option. I was just realizing that when true winter comes around, there is almost nothing from other seasons that I can wear. Anything woven is just too chilly on top. ( As in, the fabric itself feels cold against my skin, not that the fabric doesn't keep me warm enough -- that goes without saying. I mean even as a layer under a heavy sweater or blazer, it doesn't work for me.)

I will soon be putting all the wovens and silkies in the hard-to-reach parts of the closet and keeping only the super-warms close to hand.

I have a velvet top with short sleeves that I realize has almost no season. I don't like the way it looks with a long-sleeved layer beneath, and when it's warm enough for short sleeves, it's too warm for velvet. Hmm. No wonder it was in that consignment shop.

I live in typical Canadian/American climate--I just have a narrow conception of winter.

ETA: True to the climate, indoor heating is excessive, so I can't wear any heavy base layers.
