Velvet (Netflix series) anyone?

I apologize if this has been discussed before but has anyone watched Velvet? It’s not a new show but one I just discovered last month. I absolutely LOVED this show and my husband did too!

It’s set in Madrid (it’s in Spanish with subtitles) in the 50’s and 60’s, about a fashion/design store.

The main character is Ana who comes to live with her uncle as a young girl. He is the head of personnel for Velvet and he and Ana- along with the seamstresses and sales clerks- have living quarters in the store. Ana falls in love with Alberto, the son of the family who owns Velvet. But his father sends Alberto away to London to keep them apart. Ana becomes a seamstress in the store and eventually a designer.

Like Downton Abbey, the stories of the ‘help’ are just as interesting as those of the upper class store owners and customers . I loved the characters, their stories, the music, and of course the fashion.

If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it. We stayed up late the other evening to finish the last few episodes.

I am sad that it’s over and need to find a new series... any recommendations?

This sounds interesting - will have to check it out! I'm inbetween series myself, but am about to start Olive Kitteridge (4 part HBO based on the novel - starring Frances McDormand) tonight, hopefully.

I feel like maybe I started watching Velvet, but I may be confusing it with another Spanish series which involved seamstresses but also typewriters... If it’s the same, it’s a very rich drama...

I hadn't heard of it, but it sounds like I'd like it! Will keep an eye out when we next get Netflix (which will be in the middle of the year for a little while - we only get it during holidays) Not sure if Australian Netflix has it though

Thanks for the recommendation! I have it on my wish list because it looks interesting and is about fashion, but haven't heard anything about it until now. (And my list is so long I'll never get through it all.)

A perhaps similar show I have enjoyed on Netflix in the past is a Japanese series about a young woman who joins the team of a lingerie designer. I think it was called Atelier.

I watched it, all the seasons! Great show and fun fashion too! I think I started to learn some Spanish as I was watching it. (I took French in High School, and have been to France and Montreal.). Did you see Cable Girls? The theme isn’t about fashion, but there is still a lot of good fashion in the series, and it is also a Spanish soap opera, so it has the same sort of drama that Velvet has.

Speaking of Spanish subtitles - we are on the the last season of "Narcos" - it's OUTSTANDING. Unfortunately a true story. Very sad and violent, but extremely interesting and quite mind blowing. Actors very compelling.

Thanks for the heads up Susie! I'm always looking for the "non dark" series on Netflix. Have watched some of Master of None which is a comedy series.

texstyle - if you're looking for a nondark Netflix show, you might try Lovesick. It's a British rom-com that is funny, cute, and charming.

We've just finished watching Money Heist. It is as you can tell about a bank robbery, but really well done, especially first season. It is a Spanish show.
Sara L. - thanks for recommending Lovesick. I just watched a few episodes on my very long commute, and it is really fun. The main character is super sweet, and the actor is very good even though I did not like him at all in Genuis playing a young Einstein.
