URGENT Question: Boot Waterproofing

Ack!!!! Snow is now predicted for Saturday in NYC. I'm leaving early Friday morning, and I'm taking my Aquatalia boots with me.

The boots are described as weatherproof, but do I need to treat them with something to further protect them? What about the woven upper portion?

Will snow and slush stain them? Will there be salt on the streets?

Please tell me what to do; I only have tomorrow to get them ready! This was a major investment for me, even at NAS sale prices.

I am not sure about the need to further waterproof but I do have a pair of la cannadienne boots that I wear in the rain wihout further waterproofing.

As far as salt, yes, if it snows, there will be salt on the streets. I usually don't wear my best shoes if there is still snow and salt on the ground. Are you here just for the day? I can let you know the conditions here before you leave. Can I help in any way?

Thanks, Zapotee. I'll be there for the meetup and am spending the weekend. These are the most comfortable boots I have for walking.

Also, remember thay you need traction as well, when walking in the snow.

ahhh... I'll say bring those beauties and a backup plan in case of inclement weather. I have a feeling the snow will not show up. We have had such a mild winter.

Oh dear. I'd be more worried about the salt than anything. Would a protectant spray work against salt staining?

Should I bring snow boots? Warm, but not fab.

Beth, can I use any kind of Water Proofer spray? There is a can under the sink that says for shoes and boots. I am so afraid of messing them up!

I checked the local forecast. They are predicting snow showers, I asked my weatherman here LOL, he says that snow showers usually do not accumulate that much. I am not sure about the need for snowboots, I don't wear them unless I see inches of snow on the ground, but I'd make sure I bring something with traction.

I wish I was too! In fact, I've been off the board for long enough that I didn't know a meetup was being planned. Regardless, work is so busy there's no way I could take off the time. Tell everyone hello for me:)

Beth, I might swing by Nordstrom's and ask my shoe guy there. The cobbler is so gruff and always wants a week, even for the simplest thing. Probably because I don't tip him! You will have to come to the next meetup, for sure.

Whew! I had also PM'ed Angie and just heard back. She said not to worry, the boots are completely waterproof.

Well, THAT was a mini panic attack. I guess I can stop hyperventilating now. Thank goodness for my YLF friends!

I think it depends on how old your boots are and how often you wear them.

I bought a suede pair of Aquatalia boots in winter 2010/2011. I asked the salesman if I should treat them with a waterproofing spray and he said that, although they were "weatherproof," he would. I stayed out of puddles as much as I could and sprayed them when I thought about it, which wasn't often. I wore them practically every day, and they were fine for their first season. I still wear them every day, but this year, I'm spraying them regularly because one of the boots is no longer waterproof. I think wear is a great contributor to my issue, but it's something to keep in mind.

Many boot companies will not guarantee their boots are waterproof after 6 months.

I always weatherproof my boots; I also wipe them down ASAP if there was any salt on them!!

Thanks Lorem and Lyn! The boots are new so I shouldn't have a problem. Good point about wiping them down immediately after contact with salt. It's been so long since I've had to deal with snow!

The most recent forecast says 70% chance of snow with no accumulation, so that's good news.

Just wipe them down with a clean cloth when you arrive at your destination or at the end of the day. You can also use a vinegar and water cloth (think baby wipe) and keep it in you purse in a plastic bag to use when out and about. You should be fine, I wear leather and even suede boots during the winter and we salt the heck out of everything around here from November to April! I clean them up at the end of the day and so far so good!

I also buy "waterproof leather" but the sales persons always recommend treating it with spray just the same. Can't hurt!
