Urgent advice needed!

My sister's daughter is getting married in 2 months. We had hoped that we would be able to go shopping together for her Mother of the Bride outfit but that is not going to happen now as she is in hospital and confined to a wheelchair. She has limited mobility. She would like to wear a long dress or skirt that is easy to put on. We have looked through catalogues and she prefers multi-coloured outfits. Hats will be compulsory at the wedding (at the request of the bride) So we need to find something that can be complimented with a lovely hat befitting the occasion. Any advice welcome as I am going to be tearing my hair out soon!

If your sister will still be in a wheelchair at the time of the wedding, I would recommend that she wear a good looking pant outfit instead. My mother was confined to a wheelchair for many years. She loved wearing dresses but felt too exposed in regular lengths and long ones got tangled in the chair and wheels. If your sister can get in and out of the chair herself to get in a car, for example, she could do a fluid midi dress.

Thanks Joy. I did wonder about the wheels. I am going to see her this afternoon so will take the catalogues back in and we will look at trousers.

In terms of the wheelchair, long and poufy dresses with lots of fabric can get caught, but longer and narrower/sleeker skirts are not as problematic, as long at they don't drag on the floor while seated. That was my experience anyway, and I used a wheelchair for a few years at one point in my life. A midi might be a nice compromise.

Thanks Dee. I don't think she would want a narrow dress but I will put that option to her. Basically I think her wants her legs well covered. Another catalogue has just popped through the letterbox so I'll go and have a look. This is such a responsibility!

My first instinct is to think Edwardian. Relatively narrow skirts, pretty lace, great with hats!

Some of the forum ladies really love the stretchy tube midi skirts. They are easy to get on and off and super comfortable. Pair it with a pretty blouse, and some accessories ( sparkly jewelry? a nice hat or fascinator,?a dressy clutch,?a corsage?).
I like the idea of some comfortable trousers too.

My Nana was in a wheelchair for a long while. One thing to think about is that the back waists of skirts and pants tend to slip down, which can get bunchy and uncomfortable. So the back rise needs to be higher than the front, and also higher than one might wear if not seated in the WC. My mother had pants altered so they better fit my Nana. This is a difficult issue and makes a hard situation even harder. Good luck.
