Update on HL Dress

Last week I posted about a Helmut Lang dress I couldn't get out of my head and subsequently ordered off eBay (http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....-lang-help).

It arrived today and it will be going back - so glad the seller offered me a full return and refund. Although it technically fits, it is soooooo unflattering I'm not even going to post any pics.

But hey - it was fun to try

Drat! Can you describe what the fit issues were? It seemed like it would work for you, and I'm curious in case I'm ever tempted myself. Any ideas for what would work for you in this type of edgy style?

Una - the arm holes were too tight and actually cut into my underarms and because I'm high waisted, the ruching part on the side hits too low and pulls the dress over in a funny way. It is a stunningly beautiful dress though and would have been very versatile.

Sorry Una - I forgot to answer your second question about what I think would work for me in this type of edgy style. I'm not sure now. I suspect a jacket would work except I have very narrow shoulders so fit could be difficult. Maybe a skirt? I actually just found on eBay tonight your Helmut Lang skirt in the same size as the dress I just tried. But based on the fit issues of the dress, I'm leery to try the skirt.

Just gonna sit on the idea of "edgy" for now I think.

Interesting, thanks for the update in this. I do have that high armhole issue occasionally. HL tempts me if I can ever justify the price outlay someday. I like that sitting on the idea of "edgy" concept... Trying to figure out how to bring some avant garde into my look too. Send me all the answers when you have them, alright?

Is there a store in your city which carries HL stuff? I think it would be helpful to play with different items and see if they as capture you IRL as in the pictures. Also you will be able to see how does this brand fit you - usually they all have specific models so they fit the best a specific body type - like Cleo is your brand but not mine

I'm sorry that it didn't work out but at least you can stop thinking about that dress. Other than the fit, does the style feel like you?

Shannon, i'm sorry you had an unsatisfying encounter with helmut. He doesn't serve apples well.

I still think jackets are the way in for you into helmut. Think structure rather than drapey, though the sweaters may work for you.

Besides, they aren't the only edgy designers in town. Plus, i'm interested in your definition of edgy. I'm sure we can brainstorm together.

Sarah - you could be waiting quite a while for those answers - lol!

Sveta - unfortunately I haven't been able to find a single store here that carries HL so no chance of trying on other items. I suspect based on the fact that I had to choose the largest size available and it didn't fit correctly, that HL probably isn't made to be worn by my body shape and size.

Joy - I think you've just asked the million dollar question. I'm not sure it felt like me. It would have been different had the fit been correct then at least I could judge how I felt in it more accurately, you know? I did find the style more body con than I had anticipated, which I did not like.

ETA: just saw your comments bj. I do suspect the structure of the jackets would suit me more but I also know that jackets are notoriously difficult to get the shoulder fit right on me. I have very narrow, sloping shoulders so when I get the fit right in the shoulders, often a jacket will be too small across the mid section. However, I could see a more asymmetrical, draped type of jacket working (potentially anyway).

As for my definition of edgy, I guess it would be a) something that seems outside my normal style; b) something that takes a classic outfit and gives it "funk"; c) something that is an untraditional shape or has details that set it apart from a more traditional item. Does that make any sense?

I don't know about you, but I find it hit or miss at best to buy a dress without trying it on.

It was worth a try- glad it's returnable.

Shannon I am disappointed for you, but I am glad you tried it. It's the only way to find out if something will work. I have only skimmed the other replies but I agree with bj re jackets for you.

Shannon, I am way behind here and hardly even checking out the posts, but I just saw your dress link and this is one incredible dress. I'm so sad for you that it didn't work...and I WANT this dress. If I could get a similar okay on returns, I would seriously consider trying it out. It's so gorgeous and yes, versatile. I really hope you can find something that equally thrills you and works out. You know I am so on board other petites having shopping success! You especially
