Update : Job Application - YouLookFab Forum

Hi Ladies,

Just a quick update.

I am working on my job application at the moment and hope to submit it tomorrow night. Applications close on the 9th.

Had a chat with a very good friend, who is my 2IC at the community meal I co-ordinate, who has shared in a very balanced manner that there are quite a lot of issues the potential new job. She actually volunteers there weekly and there are a lot of staff and volunteers very set in their ways and very resistant to change. Someone was placed into the role I am applying for last year and only lasted a few months. One of the board members (who appears to be very competent stepped into the role in the interim). The upside is that the organisation does great work and she find it very fulfilling being involved there

I have encountered similar attitudes in my current role so it's nothing new but has given me reason to really think about what I might be getting myself into!

I do love a challenge tho

You are in my thoughts That's a hard one though Deborah; there is a challenge & then there is banging your head against a brick wall Is there any way you could volunteer there too - to get a feel for the place?

Caro that's a good suggestion but I just don't have the time. I think having the knowledge of what is going on will help to frame the questions I will have if I get to the interview stage. I would need to feel very confident that the Board (this role resports to the Chairman) is 100% behind me should I be successful. I also would be asking them to be VERY clear on what their expectations and objectives were for the first 12 months. I have quite a bit of experience in managing people through change and I am quite resiliant. In my last two (includes this my current) roles I have experienced very challenging situations and have come out the other side relatively unscathed I think for me it will be down to clear and direct communications during the interview process (should I get to interview) and prayer... these two combined have never led me astray

I am sure you will take this challenge in stride! I found that the best way to get people on board with changes is to make them a part of the decision making, not just tell them what to do differently. I am sure you have enough sense and tact to succeed!

Great advice Sveta. Change can be so difficult for some people and taking the volunteers and staff on the journey is the challenge, more so than the actual change. I feel confident that if it's right the doors will open but if not...

You're right (of course) I guess it comes down to whether the end result is worthwhile. I'm at a point in my life where that sort of challenge would not be appealing, but 20 years ago I would have felt differently.

I'll keep praying, Deborah. Perhaps by actually coming in for an interview and meeting with the higher-ups, you will get more of a feeling as to how you would fit in there.

Caro this is what I have been processing. Is this what I want at this time of my life? My son is still young and family is my priority so I will have to process it all and decide if it's worth it.

Yes that's the question for sure - those sorts of roles can be very rewarding but they take a LOT of energy.

We would miss your very regular input on the Forum too!
Note that once DS is in High School you will be less needed there, and his growing independence might have you looking for more stimulation on the work front.
This also depends on your involvement with older family members as well though- when I was at your stage I craved more 'Grown-up Me-time' but I was needed (and gladly took on) a more hands-on role with my ageing parents.
I have been thinking of you since this opportunity came up Deborah.

Deb, I know you are a strong lady and extremely competent. I'm, glad you've got the opportunity now to plan your interview questions more carefully so that you know what is expected. Caro and Sveta make good points to and I'm sure the outcome will be right for you whatever you decide or is decided for you, God willing. Best of luck.
