Unexpected K/R: Born Lira Burgundy Pirate Boots

I went to return the Melin boots, and these were out next to the register, on sale. They are not really what I initially had in mind - I had thought of a shorter boot - but the textured finish just slays me. More importantly, they are super, suuuuuper comfortable. I thought it was at least worth a try with my skinnies (I had bf jeans on in the store).

The calf is nicely fitted except for the top portion. I think it's supposed to be that way but, if not, I think I can have the top strap shortened so that it actually functions to tighten the boot.

What do you think? Too crazy? Poor fit? Not versatile?

I like them more than the Melins. They seem more you. Borns are comfortable.

OMG, I can see why you fell for the finish. And they are super comfy, you say? And the fit and shaft height look good to me. I'd say they are a keeper -- if they don't duplicate something you already have.

In my mind I am stalking these boots, but I need to be good :b

ETA: oh phew, measurements seem to indicate these are too tall for me

Love the color and changing the strap would make them fit better at the top.

These are beautiful! They do look a wee bit too tall to me because of how they flare out at the top. Do they pass the sit test with bending your knees? Are they taller than the Julias?

Hm, some good issues are being pointed out here.

Ceit, you might be right that tall boots are overrepresented. I do have two pairs of flat Fryes that are comfortable for all but the longest shifts at work.

Una, they are the same height as the Julias but, as you say, these flare out whereas I can taper the Julas toward the knee because of the laces.

I might be better off buying used Borns and mimicking the finish with colored shoe polish...

I think they are supposed to look that way but I feel they are making you a wee bit knock-kneed (which I know you are not!) - it could be the way you're standing and where they hit your leg and flare at the same time. Can we make them an inch shorter?

Knock-kneed, huh? Ok, no bueno. I actually wish they went up until the seam that attaches the... cuff/shield/flap thing, but I'm not going to hack into them at this price. I'm definitely going to look into more Borns, though. The last pair I had felt wide, but maybe some other styles are narrow like this.

The finish makes me want to call them crackle fire boots. I think they are visually interesting, and I like different in a sea of similar tall riding boots. Not sure you 'need' them, but is that the question??

Unfortunately, need kind of is the question. The overriding need is for one more pair of shoes that can take the worst of my retail days without any second thoughts about socks, extra insoles, heel height, whatever. Now that you guys have me questioning the height, I think I should have stuck with my guns for a shorter boot.

I love those boots but to my eye they also look a bit too high. Not sure. They are gorgeous, though!

Ah Rae, the finish gives me pause but I confess I have been traumatized by "Bodies, The Exhibition", I cannot see prosciutto, dried meats, or finishes like this one. That is my issue though. I just find them a wee bit tall, could they scrunch down with use?

I love the colour and texture of these Rae and they could sooooo work with your style and wardrobe. I'm wondering the same thing as Zap - is it possible as they break in and the leather softens that they could slouch down some, getting shorter? Do they bother you at all when you sit in terms of the height?

Hm, they are already pretty soft and slouch fine at the ankle. I don't think they will drop more because of how fitted they are in the calf. :T

Marianna, I do have a little something on hold for the house party! I need to go in early one day and pick out more things, though. It is too hectic to shop when I'm on the clock. It's fun that I started just in time to enjoy some sweet benefits!

If you always plan on wearing these with pants then I think they are great. AND... comfort is a huge plus. I think the loose top is part of the look and the height with pants is fine. With skirts/dresses maybe a diferent story.

EEEEEW, Zap! That exhibit is at our museum right now! I'm not squeamish about handfeeding live crickets to a lizard, but I can barely stand to walk by the display posters... I know it's cool and all, but *shudder*.
