Uh oh, second thoughts on a Final Sale

So, I had a credit at Rue La La that was apparently burning a hole in my [virtual] pocket. So I signed on, shopped, and bought this Nicole Miller cocoon dress. Which I will certainly wear over leggings. If I ever wear it, that is.

Now I'm freaking out a bit, well, a lot, since I have really broad shoulders and this sucker is going to make me look just like a linebacker. A linebacker in leggings. And a zigzag print. All I can say in my defense is it was after midnight.

Sigh.

To be honest, I would not have noticed the model's shoulders one whit had you not brought it up. My eye was drawn to how big or at least undefined her waist looks with the baggy midsection, and this could be simply remedied with a belt. Since you can't return it anyway, why not post pics so we can further advise. It's a cool-looking dress that looks like it has tons of accessorizing potential!

Pillow cases, Mochi. I can see making pillow cases out of this dress in my future. Thanks for the advice. I will play around with it once it arrives, but have the scissors laying near to hand.

Kate, wait a minute. I don't think your shoulders will necessarily look bigger in this cute number. I have broad shoulders too and dresses like these fit me really well actually, especially because I have broad shoulders. The bare shoulder detail is really cute too. I think you might be surprised when you try it on.

(I also have broad-ish shoulders too, so I do have a dog in this fight.

I had forgotten to add that I think if anything this dress might make your shoulders look narrower. The eye being led in by the narrowness of the straps/sleeves, that end before the shoulders really begin. I really don't think it will be a broadening effect, but please post some pics before you take your scissors to them!

As another 'padded shouldered' girl, I agree with krishnidoux --- the cold-shoulder style and the chevron-ish diagonals should actually be very flattering on you. I think it's too early to panic when you haven't even tried it on yet. Why borrow trouble? Wear, post and then panic if you need so that we can help you through it more usefully

Thank you, my broad-shouldered sisters, for talking me down out of the trees [I'm still clinging to the low branches]. I'll work with it, but I have to admit, my eye is jaundiced now for this little number.

Well, I have other things to occupy my time.

When watering my garden Thursday evening--temps are just shy of the 100 degree mark where I am--I flushed a tiny kitten out from under the shrubs. The morning has been spent arranging to get a trap and alerting the neighbors. My fur babies are just going to have to get used to another addition. Need some good directional vibes to get this kitten back to the spot where I was able to feed it late last evening. We really want to get this little guy soon; this kind of heat is no good for man, woman or beast, especially for the very young and the very old.

Aww, poor little kitty. Hope s/he comes back soon. I am not surprised about the heat, hearing you're in DC (heard Baltimore was going to be at or around 110 for the next few days!!!!!) Blah. You are so kind and sweet to be helping out this little furball.

I think it's a cool dress -- it may not have the effect you think it will as far as broadening the shoulders. Wait until it comes and try it on. Sometimes these things are surprising.

What Janet said - don't second guess before you even have it on! And then even if you hate it, there are alternatives to scissors - consignment, Ebay, a gift to someone you have to buy for but don't necessarily like... (just kidding on the last one). Something tells me it will look better on you than on the model, though.

BTW, in the Fall, this dress will look AMAZING with a cropped faux-fur jacket or vest. What do you think?
