I get really irritated at these kinds of articles. Beyond any specific item of clothing (because whatever you wear, someone is going to like it and someone is going to hate it), the thing that irritates me is the idea that women should care. That we should dress to please men. I've posted this in many threads...it makes me irate! I've been married for 30 years and it still makes me see red.

The funniest thing along these lines I ever read was an article where men looked in women's closets and made assumptions about the women based on what was in there. One of the women collected vintage designer shoes...mega bucks museum quality collection. The man's impression? "She must be poor, all she can afford is old shoes".

Basically, men don't know anything.

I think women dress to please other women more than to please men, and I think men are way more tolerant of women's clothes than this inane article would have us believe. I think most men don't notice style too much as long as it is genuine and the wearer owns it. As if they don't like bandeau tops!

I'd take no notice; it only encourages them to write more of this rubbish.

There are a lot of men who are very attracted to women who are on top of trends. That conveys a certain message about oneself, even if one particular trend isn't the best in their opinion.

And who gives a rip about what random men think, anyway? My DH strongly prefers me to wear jeans and "stompy shoes". I myself prefer dresses (at least we agree on the shoes). But he knew how I dressed when he married me, and while I consider his opinion, I mostly don't.

You can't please random people you don't even know yet. Dress for yourself and the rest will sort itself out.

Where's the article that talks about all the crap men wear? Oh wait, it doesn't exist, because women are willing to look past ugly sandals, and a man wouldn't dream of ditching his ugly, outdated clothes for a woman.

I think it's really sad that articles like this exist. Why should we care if a random group of dudes don't like peplums or beanies?

And if some guy doesn't want to date you because he doesn't like your style, he's dumb, and shallow to boot.

P.S.
Sorry if I sound a little ranty. I'm not really, I just dislike the subject of the article. A lot.

This article was something written to get readership, and for entertainment. It's not meant to be research. So I too would put zero stock in it.

Many of the women in the pictures were extremely beautiful. Do you really want to tell me that a man wouldn't have wanted to date one of those beautiful women simply because she was wearing a peplum top or had high-waisted shorts on? I don't think so!

What I don't like is the snarky superior tone, it's just not funny. And what's so wrong with revisiting the 80s? Or the 90s? Let's remember the Huff Post is famous for not paying its writers.

This is me blowing a big raspberry to that. I mean, I agree that there's something a little sad about some poor girl trying desperately to wobble along in terribly uncomfortable shoes, but I can't imagine it would be a deal breaker. And the rest of these are ridiculous. "Don't wear hi-lo dresses/sweaters/peplums, because they add bulk and men want to see your shape... BUT WAIT... also don't wear tops that show your bra, sexy heels, or short shorts, because men hate seeing too much of your shape. "

I just feel bad that there are women out there honestly torturing themselves, awash with self doubt that somehow, their obvious eye makeup is the reason they can't find a decent guy.

I think this type of article is on regular rotation. IT seems every few months there is one like it. The guys, if they really exist, sound rather shallow.

A man who's serious about making an authentic connection will look for signs of shared values, and that can happen in ways that don't make sense to us. But mostly, he's going to be very, very flexible on things like floppy hats, peplums and footwear.

There is a little truth in this, not all of it, but some. I've found that my male friends prefer subtle makeup to dramatic looks. Bright red lipstick is intimidating (and they don't want it smearing on them). Super high heels, especially the platform stilettos, are right down scary. I think the majority of men are just conservative in terms of fashion.

While I am an advocate of dressing for ourselves, in certain circumstances, like first dates, a more conventional style probably increases accessibility. Once past the initial barriers, I think most guys embrace personal style as part of the package. If not, then well, door's that way.

One of the magazines I read regularly has a section where men comment on women's outfits. I read it because I think the comments are hilarious and reveal how clueless mean are. If the girl has high heels or a revealing top they will say the outfit is sexy even if the last time anyone wore a similar outfit was Madonna circa Material Girl!:)

But, I think trendy clothes sometimes intimidate men, and dating is all about first impressions. Of course, anyone who is worth your while will get over it and ask you on a second date anyway. In any case, I don't think this is your situation Anna. I am talking in general.

I hate the "do" and "don't" articles. I think we just have to say "no" to this type of bias. Everyone should dress their body type, their preferences, there events with appropriateness in mind. If we do that we will look and feel fabuous and that's what people will notice. At least that's what I am planning to do!!

This was "written" by a woman. So what men is she talking about? No real person is being quoted here, those quotes are as good as made up. It's not even an article, it's a rant on what the author's preferences are on current trends. There's no explanation of why these trends are hated by men, there's no research done on how men actually view women's clothing or what the psychological implications of wearing lipstick are. The quotes are unbelieveably sexist. I mean who says that "her shoulders look like a linebacker" and "hooker makeup" and "her booties have a foreskin?" If this article was written by man I'd think him juvenile. But since it's written by a woman I think she's being misogynistic and destructive.

Ugh is right. This is so subjective. I would like to see their research - I bet the sample size was like 8 dudes. But also, Ditto Aziraphale: LOL mullet skirts.

Most of the quotes sound made-up, and this reads like one of an infinite number of internet articles trying to grab attention and reader-clicks to generate money from advertisers.

Seriously, I don't know any guy who is this picky about how a woman dresses - who isn't a fashionista himself. And the fashionista guys I know who are that picky... just aren't interested in me in that way to begin with.

Guys are guys. If you are reasonably attractive (i.e., got all your own teefs, and you make eye contact and aren't scowling when you do), guys are interested. I have been cat-called and hit on in grungy sweatpants, shapeless clothes, and with stringy hair and no makeup.

Anna, you are seriously knock-out cute. I really, truly, honestly don't think that a guy is going to walk away from you because you're wearing a peplum top or wedge sneakers. Relax and be you, because you are awesome

re: Dating foibles. Most guy friends I know just want to be around a girl who makes them feel relaxed, like they are not on trial or an audition as immediate husband/baby-providing fodder, and that they are desired.

Some trends might make you seem more intimidating to some guys, so I'd probably keep that in mind when dressing for first dates. When meeting someone for the first time, you want to be yourself, but also approachable, right?

FWIW, my husband likes peplums, mullet skirts and I hate to say it, but he'd probably like the side boob shirts, lol. He--and a lot of guys in Seattle--aren't crazy about a lot of makeup, wobbly shoes, etc.

The thing that really struck me about this "article" was the breathtaking level of meanspiritedness in the comments (which do indeed sound made up). Not only the swearing and the insults, but the unspoken assumption that of course it is utterly appropriate for men to critique women's fashion choices and belittle them for those choices. Ugh.

The topper, to me, was "Pantsuits... you're a woman, not a man." Women really can't seem to win! Grrr....

I'm not gonna judge the guys as shallow because hey - they were asked! I think the right partner will appreciate your personal style or just not mind at all. So if anyone has a problem with your outfits it's just weeding out unsuitable dates anyway.
