Two Trenches. Your thoughts, please?

Trench hunt 2014 continues with two more contenders. In pic #1 on the left is a traditional double breasted trench from Zara, and on the right a single breasted style from London Fog.

London Fog:
-Exactly the colour I was looking for
-Nice light weight
-Good fit across shoulders, maybe a bit large in body
-Wish the belt was buckled, and it is a bit flimsy
-Has pleats in front and back that are basted shut in the pictures (see pic #8)

Zara:
-Traditional trench style with all the details I want (epaulettes, back vent)
-good fit, perhaps a touch snug across the shoulders
-Nice weight
-Belt stays flat and has some structure
-colour is a warmer tan than I would prefer

What do you think? Is one of these a clear winner? Should I keep looking? And is it unethical to remove the basting on the London Fog to see what it looks like with the pleats open?

Definitely the Zara. I think the color and the black buttons really complement your complexion and dark hair so nicely. The shape seems more streamlined too.

The other one seems too ... beige. Not soul-sucking exactly but it's disconcertingly close to your skin color and kind of makes your face get lost.

I really like the Zara trench. The fit looks good, the details front and back are very nice. The London Fog is nice too, but a bit understated.

I actually prefer the color of the London Fog on you, but I like the fit better of the Zara. Sorry, not really helpful.

I prefer the styling of the Zara one by a mile. The dark buttons are a really nice touch, and they do look nice with your hair. IKWYM about the warm tan color though. The color of the London Fog looks better to me, but the style and cut look dated to me. You could get the Zara, and wear some color at your neck or keep looking. Brooks Brothers makes a knee-length khaki trench that looks like a rosey-beige (that I have) but I don't know if that would be too long for you (or more than you want to spend). Oooh, I just found it and it's on sale for 50% off!

I was so confused by all the replies until I realized that the Zara one is pictured first. Zara for sure!

Neither of these is a 10 imo. Style wise I much prefer the Zara one - for the reasons you point out. I'd keep looking if I were you.

That Zara one is LOVELY! But if it's too tight across the shoulders, it may make you crazy. Especially if you layer up underneath. I would keep looking. It's out there!

I prefer the styling of the Zara one by far. It feel modern classic to me, whereas the other feels . . . Not exactly dated but not modern either.

Not sure either is a 10 though, and with how much outerwear gets worn. . .

I prefer the Zara. IMO, you don't sound particularly in love with either. Unless you really, really need it (as in needed it yesterday), I think I'd pass on both and keep looking.

I prefer the Zara coat by a mile. The contrasting buttons and double breasted style are much more flattering, IMO.

I agree with Amy in NC - I much prefer the Zara, but the tight shoulder fit is a dealbreaker for me. What if you want to wear a sweater underneath? I think PPP is in order, maybe?

I like the Zara. Two questions though. Since you said it may be a touch snug across the shoulders, do you have enough room to layer under? Are you happy with the length?

I prefer the Zara one as well. Both the colour and the style are very flattering. it also feels younger to me - in a good way

I vote for the Zara one, I like the style on you. But if the fit doesn't feel right and you're not 100% happy with it, it might be best to keep looking for "the one".

I too voice concern about the Zara being too tight in the shoulders. When it's raining out, it can be bone-chilling cold, and you might want to layer under it. How snug are we talking?

Personally, I wouldn't cut open the basting on the London Fog. I always view that as something that's for the final owner--kind of like proof that it is brand new.

I far prefer the Zara (maybe even the colour of it, though it's hard to say) but like Gigi I wonder if it's a bit snug in the shoulder area.

I can't remember now, I am sorry -- did you already try the cream BR trench?

Zara looks better, but I am fond of the sheer functionality of London Fog. I always wear my London Fogs.

well, I always go for the classics (zara) but in this case, I prefer the way the London fit!

Hmmm. Lots to think about. I think I need to re-asses my color preference. I got it in my head that I wanted something in more of a stone colour, but I think Diana has a point and I might be perilously close to "soul sucking beige" territory with the London Fog coat. Plus now that I am looking at it in pictures with fresh eyes it does look a little dated.

I do like the style of the Zara trench, and it was DHs fave of all the ones I have tried, but I need more room in the shoulders. So back they both go...

@Suz, I did try the BR cream trench, but returned because I didn't like the colour. The fit was impeccable, though.
