Two tone trench coat - YouLookFab Forum

This is a keeper for me. This replaces a couple lighter weight spring and fall coats that were too small. It was about $150 on sale. The fabric is medium weight canvas twill. It is satin lined and snaps shut. It has silver hardware. It hits me about mid calf, I'm 5'6"

I like the unusual color scheme and pleated sleeves. I dont love the snaps as I'm sure it will unsnap as i move around in it, from time to time. It's a bit longer than would be perfect, but the longer length will mean it's a bit warmer and more versatile.

Two cons. The belt, which is EXTREMELY long and with a metal buckle feel almost like a weapon. The buckle on the end is not very high quality and is poorly attached so that the buckle slides around a lot and looks sloppy.
The pockets, which are top entry, with snap closure flap, not very convenient for keeping hands warm.

It's nothing to choose a buckle you like better and swap it out or have a tailor or dry cleaner do it. You could have it shortened, to boot. Is it still too long to suit you if you tied it instead of actually buckling it?

The 2- tone is interesting.
But, will you prefer more usable pockets? I need slant/side entry pockets to get the right feel, and unstudied vibe when hands are in pockets.
Do you think you are cool- or warm- toned, for colors?

What Vildy said. I suspect the belt was meant to be tied and not buckled, but it would be easy to have it cut down and the buckle changed

Oh, that's an excellent piece! Classic but distinctive.

Buckles on trench belts usually annoy me anyway -- I'd rather tie as it's quicker. Maybe the belt can be altered to eliminate the buckle?

Some thoughts:

is the sleeve length bothering you?
are you sure you're okay with no side entry pockets? I know what that is like in Seattle. Can be grim...
the length of the belt is probably deliberate so that you can tie a bow or knot
I quite fancy having a built-in weapon

make those pockets side entry.

You can see in the second photo I have it tied. I likely wouldn't wear it actually buckled. It is an exceedingly long belt. I probably could tie a bow! Lol.

I probably wont take it to have it altered because of the pandemic. The buckle really just needs to be "stitched in the ditch" or whatever (not a sewist!) So it stays put. Or taken off, as Janet suggested. Maybe some day I will have that done and the hem taken up. Good idea to convert to pockets to also be side entry. It's not a deal breaker for me as I CAN stick hands in them and I typically wear gloves if I go out in the cold for any length of time.

I didnt notice the sleeves being particularly long. When I try it on again I'll pay attention to that more...

The coat looks really interesting, Jeneva. I like the classic style with unusual details. I hope you can deal with the belt issue. If sleeves are long, they can be altered.

Angie knows how much I love a trench, and this is a good one! Tie that belt in a little half-loop knot and you're good to go. Can you make the buckles a the sleeve a little tighter: that might highlight the pleating and make them fit closer to the wrist.

I love the look of the trench. I never buckle the belt on my trench. I always tie it.

I have thought of getting side entry pockets put into my Theory coat for a couple of years. Might be worth looking into.

Good idea to buckle the sleeves tighter. I have very narrow wrists, it will emphasize the pleating.

I always tie my belted trenches as well. (-; I can do the half-loop thing...I tried it at first but it's somewhat of a narrow belt and looked a little fussy to my eye (and the point of that tie is to look chic and casual and sort of undone, so fussy is definitely not the point). I'll play with it. Likely I will need to get the belt shortened though. I tied it (see photo two) and it's still ending at my knees. When I walk that lethal buckle will be thwapping me in my kneecaps!

Perhaps the belt is a sign to change careers to CIA agent....
