Two questions about winter

Do y'all wear the same outer coat every day and do you wear thin silky fabrics? I'm thinking I have a silly amount of coats and am noting I avoid my silky shirts in winter. At the same time, I don't like to wear the same coat every day because I'm always so cold, so they're pretty much all anybody sees. And the blouses, I figure a two month hiatus is probably fair enough. I don't know...

I'm like you, Rachy. No silky blouses in winter.....not even in our mild one. And when it is cold, it's only my coat that other people see....so I do have a nice collection of jackets and coats I love. If it's a little warm, people see my sweater when I slip off my coat. I like to pick sweaters with a little bit of detail or a nice cut for this very reason....

Interesting question Rachy. I don't wear silky blouses in winter. But then I don't own any silky blouses so I never wear them. I would wear an Equipment shirt in silk if I owned one under a sweater.
I have one puffer. Actually two. One new one and one old one. The new one is my go to and the old one is really looking well old. I do own other winter coats but our winters are so cold that only a down coat works. I could buy another puffer and then I would have a selection of puffers to wear. But I have another solution. I go to Florida for 10 weeks. I have priced out the cost of snow boots and puffers plus hats, gloves and scarves and realized it is cheaper to escape most of winter. Snowbird math.

I definitely wear silky shirts in winter. I wear something under them for added warmth though. I also have more than one winter coat. I have two wool, and four down puffers of varying weights and lengths. I definitely switch them up depending on how cold it is and the color of what I am wearing underneath, and the thickness of what I am wearing on top, etc.

I have a variety of coats, simply for the reason mentioned, it is the main focal point of most of my winter outfits. I got a great reversible puffer this winter, black and leopard print, so I got two different looks from the one coat. As for silky blouses, I tend to wear knits in winter, so the silky blouses mainly have a break for winter.

I kind of love outerwear. And I'm in Michigan. So lots of coats. Oddly only one puffer. I have two overcoats, one camel, brand new that I am adoring; a blue with grey pin stripe. Both get a lot of wear but not in the bitter cold. A grey pea coat great for wearing with bigger knitwear items; it's roomy. A black unlined Vince pea coat that is simply gorgeous, the drape, the hand, the fabric. A vintage leopard swing coat, vintage short curly lamb, bracelet sleeve jacket, and a vintage wool and cashmere cocoon coat with fur collar and bejeweled large buttons, my evening coat (like I need that any more). Yes I love coats. And I sometimes wear silky shirts in the cold but like some others with a bodycon layer.

One puffer but several wool coats, and I do rotate depending on my mood. It's part of the fun of winter for me.

I wear thin silky tops more rarely but I do wear them sometimes. Tricky, though, because I run cold.

I'm with you. I have a ridiculous amount of coats, but I like them all and like making them part of my outfit. I have 2 overcoats - med length navy, long brown (ancient), 2 puffers (long black, medium length red for snow play), 2 anoraks (1 puffy, one with zip out linings), 1 pea coat and some fun faux fur coats. This does not include the midweight trench variety.
If I had one I would be so sick of it at the end of the season I would burn it. Silky blouses make me feel cold so I go with knits over wovens of any kind in winter except for flannel. I do wear the odd blouse with a sweater over, but as a rule I reach for a knit first.

Where I live, winter can last a good four months, so I believe in having several coats and jackets because yes, sometimes that's all anyone sees of my outfits. As for silky blouses, I will wear one in the winter for really dressy occasions, but I do layer silk camisoles underneath. I have several from Lands End and they do add a good deal of warmth. I sized down to get a tight fit.

I'm with you ... I stick to warm layers in winter! Re the coats, I currently only have one proper coat (puffer) and plan to add a second for next season so I have options, since it gets worn for four months!!

I like to change up my outerwear...but if its too cold i only have one puffer so that wins by default. I have two silky front sweatshirts that i have to wear a crew neck tee under in order to be warm enough. It is freezing out right now and i saw a young women out today in a mini skirt and tall boots without leggings/hose, so to each her own, some have a higher tolerance to the cold (and i grew up in interior Alaska )

Oh, I have a ridiculous number of coats... and added five more this year!! (that is NOT usual, it's been several years since I've had a new one). We have weather ranging from 9 and raining (today) to -30 windchill factors. And sometimes both in the same day. So you need variety to deal with the different weather. And of course, like you, the fact they are seen a lot, so why not?

I also tend to not wear light woven tops as much... it's not a conscious thing, but the need to feel cozy can be high!

We are now in what is usually the coldest part of winter when only a puffer will do. I have two. If it warms up a bit, a wool coat gets an outing.
I rarely wear silk shirts this time of year except as a layer under or over something else. A couple of days ago I wore a silky print top over a Cuddle Dud tee but still was cold indoors and needed to add a furry vest.

For me only3 coats(all black, diff. lengths and level of dressiness) and mainly knits(so no silks) are the way to go for winters, here. Thus said, am wearing my mix media graphic tee today(silky front, but knitted tee shirt at the back) and a chunky cardi, but this is not the norm and my office is cosy warm!:-).

Even after a huge edit last year (and the year before), I own a very silly amount of coats! I often think about editing further, however, I justify all my coats because where I live we have four seasons and within each season the weather can vary a great deal. And because of my lifestyle (stay at home person) outerwear is what most people see me wearing on daily basis. I also like my coat to be part of my outfit and I have not found any way to do this without owning a ridiculous amount. So I just have settled on the fact that I have a huge coat collection.

As far as silky shirts in winter, I generally give them a rest until the weather warms because I hate the static that happens when you take off your coat. Plus I run cold and even with an insulating layer underneath I'm just too cold. I would use a silky collared shirt layered under a knit though. The other day I did the opposite, after being inspired by Angie's blog about layering a shirt over a turtleneck, and a post about turtlenecks, I layered a blouse over a turtleneck. It was freezing, rainy and damp so static wasn't a problem on this day and the silk blend turtleneck atop my insulating layer kept me warm.

I do not wear silky tops in the winter. Too cold, even with a sweater over top.

I currently have two winter coats (grey and black) and alternate to reduce wear. I seem to be content with just the two for now.

I have a variety of coats for different conditions. Wet, windy, cold, really cold, barely cold. Also dressy or not.

Hooded 3/4 length raincoat with zip out liner - waterproof, windproof, not warm
Hooded duffle coat - pretty warm, sporty
Hooded below knee down coat - very very warm
Shin length camel hair coat - dressy and very warm
Ankle length wool/cashmere coat - dressy and warm

I also have a lot of jackets including a couple of pea coats, down jackets of varying weights, and several hooded waterproof shells with lots of pockets for birding/hiking and dog walking. I know what you mean about being cold. When we're out birding I'm always cold. Around New Years the highs were in the 20s and windy and cloudy. Even with long underwear and my heaviest down jacket I was still cold.

I have lots of coats and have as much fun mixing them with different scarves, hats, and gloves as I do putting my "inside" outfits together. I usually don't wear silky blouses in the winter, but I'm actually wearing one today under a chunky cardigan. It worked with the rest of the outfit and today is not terribly cold.

I like having a selection of coats to rotate, depending on my outfit, weather conditions, and mood. Like Jeanne says, if I had to wear the same coat everyday, I'd get so bored of one coat after a season that I wouldn't want to see it again. Besides, our winters are variable enough that I might need a puffer one day, a long wool coat the next, a shorter not-so-warm pea coat on the next, and maybe just a leather jacket the day after.

At the moment, I'm feeling my longer, roomier costs more than the shorter pea coat styles, but I'm not getting rid of those latter ones because they are classic, in very good condition, and I like them. Coats are one type of item I have a hard time purging from my wardrobe.

As for silky shirts, I will sometimes wear them in the winter, mostly layered with a thin fitted silky tee underneath. I'm running warmer these days, so I'm moving away from heavy sweaters and toward lighter layers.

No silky blouses for me under winter coats - I find they get staticky .

And I have a ridiculous number of coats and like it that way ! For exactly the reason you mention: I have to wear one everyday and it's all people see . I remember the years of owning only one or two, and don't recall feeling bad about it though. I used to get so excited about getting a new coat - and replacing something truly worn. Funny how things have changed, and not necessarily for the better......great, now I have managed to reflect and type myself into a funk. Hmmm.

At the moment I have 3 heavy (puffer alternative) wool coats and one lighter weight one. This is low for me! I get really bored wearing the same coat every single day.

Silk shirts depends on indoor temps to be honest. It's easy to layer up for outdoors. (A big blanket scarf can cover your entire front inside your coat of you get cold). But indoors I don't want to be too bundled up so I wear my silk tops with just a blazer or cardigan. My current lab is too cold so I haven't been wearing them much in winter. I'm not a huge fan of the button down under pullover look (it's always bunchy on me) but that's a warmer option.

I have a TON of silk blouses despite running cold. I find they work great as a thin layer as long as I have a camisole underneath and a thin wool sweater on top. they must be silk though - polyester or satin makes me cold.

I guess I'm not crazy in my thinking about having multiple coats. I should probably try to look for an underlayer with a better neckline. I find the necklines of my blouses and thermals get in the way of eachother visually.

Do not wear silky shirts much in winter. Coats depend entirely on the weather - not all cold is the same. Wet, windy, snowing, below zero.... so many factors to consider, and so much outerwear to buy!

I don't wear silky blouses in the winter. Angie's and other's method of wearing thermals underneath make sense but I just can't do it. I almost always wear knits of some sort. I also have an assortment of wool overcoats, very heavy coat/cardigans and lighter cardigans/coats/jackets that get a lot of wear in the fall/winter/spring months. I have one boring black wool coat that I probably wear the most (I'm not sure why, habit I guess) and then a couple brighter coats (one turquoise and one bright pink) that I wear when I start getting bored.

I have one wool coat and one puffer coat at the moment. Those are really meant for different temperatures, so depending on weather I wear the same coat everyday. So far I only had to take out the puffer for a week or so. I could see myself getting maybe another wool coat for variation. But no second puffer, because I don't need one that often and I don't like the look of it. I wear mine purely for functionality. And I definitely prefer warm knitwear to anything silky in winter, even with added layers.

Even though my climate is much more warm than cold - the 4 or so months of cool/cold weather are enough for me to own a few different coats. For the coldest days, one wool, one warm fleece, one leather (that I haven't worn this year and may find a new home for), and many jackets in various shapes/sizes and weights.
