Turtleneck: what defines frumpy?

So, I would like to add a nice black turtleneck to my wardrobe. I would like a "tailored fit" from today's post.

What do I look for in a modern turtleneck? I want it to look polished, not frumpy? Can I find that in cotton or a cotton blend that does not require dry-cleaning? Wool and cashmere are out as I have to wear a layer between them and my fussy skin.

I have looked at Norstrom's website, Talbots, Ann Taylor and Land's End. I just cannot tel frump from polished yet!

You'll probably have to try some on, Thistle, and get a sense for the different cuts offered by different manufacturers. It's really hard to tell from the pictures because they often pin the shirts so they don't look so boxy. And what's great on one person might look bad on another.

I think a cotton-modal blend is great for a layering T. It is smooth and silky but it breathes well, and can fit nicely. In my experience a lot of 100% cotton ones stretch out, but it could be I've had poor quality shirts!

So far the best turtlenecks I found were really nice, all cotton turtlenecks sold by Talbots last year around Christmas. I think they were in stores from November until January.

They were not exactly layering turtlenecks but more like fine-gauged sweaters with fully-fashioned sleeves (not cut and sewn together). The knit was fairly heavy, resulting in non-clingy and trim fit, and the colors bright and intense. I got mine on sale for about $29 each. There is nothing like this on Talbots website now but maybe they will show up later in the season. I found a tiny picture online.

I don't know if this is modern but they certainly fit me better than any other turtlenecks. They were fairly thick so good for my cold office.

I think the key thing, in terms of frump avoidance, is that you do want it to skim the body curves - not just hang straight past them and then stop abruptly at the waist.

The absolute best T-neck I ever had was a mix of silk and cotton from Nygard. It was ribbed, black and fit but didn't cling. It was also a slightly mock neck so not too high or tight. I wore it into the ground over a three to four year period.

I think the key is that the knit has to be tight so it holds its shape but with a fine gauge yarn so it isn't bulky.

I bought two INC turtlenecks (black and red) after I saw a few pics of Angie wearing them. In the US you can get them at Macy's (and probably many other stores) in Canada I've seen them at Eatons. Nice fit - wash well -- good basic item.

Turtlenecks are like jeans - they can look fabulous or awful, depending on the fit. However, turtlenecks generally don't flatter short necks.

For a polished look, try a cotton blend as it is less likely to fade.

Try to avoid 100% cotton, or cotton poly blends. They tend to shrink a bit more, and the dark and rich winter colors will be more apt to fade.

The nicest fabric I've found in that type of top is Rayon (or modal) blend. The appearance will stay nicer if you wash on gentle cycle and hang to dry, over a line not on a hanger.

I agree that you will just have to try them on to find the brand that fits your body best.
