I love turtlenecks, but this year I’m having trouble finding what I want

is anyone aware of a non-sweater turtleneck that has a nice tall, snug and fitted neck that doesn’t slouch or fall down? If it comes in a tall, that would be a bonus, but not necessarily a deal-breaker. The J. Crew Perfect Fit is very close, but the fabric is stiff and a bit too heavy for my climate. I love the fabric of the LL Bean, but the neck is too loose. I have seen a couple of options with nicely fitted necks, but they are super tight and clingy through the body. As you can see, I’m very picky about my turtles. Thanks for any help in finding my holy grail item.

No suggestions, unfortunately, but commiseration on the challenge of finding just the right turtleneck!! It's harder than it seems at first glance.

The women’s are available in fitted and looser versions, and a variety of sizes including tall.

DH is a fan of their men’s mock neck (he needs a tall), and replenishes his collection of basic colours every other year - and has been doing so for 20+ years. Material quality has been consistent.

Following along with interest. Turtlenecks are not my best, and they’re usually too warm, but also all the other factors you mention! I hate anything tight or itchy on my neck, and many are either too fitted or too heavy. I have an ancient lightweight black one from JCrew, I think, that is still hanging in there. But I think that much black so close to my face is starting to look not so great anymore…

Hmm no brilliant ideas but Uniqlo might be worth a look? They often have these sort of basics ...?

I actually really love J Crew Factory turtlenecks! Fitted, light but not thin like a tissue tee. I haven’t tried regular J Crew turtlenecks so I don’t know how they compare but generally they do have different fits, so it’s worth a shot.

Does Boden have some maybe? I love turtlenecks....though my requirements are a bit different, so I tend to wear merino versions. Anyway, from Boden I have ribbed cotton ones from a few seasons ago that I like a lot.

Thank you! No luck with any of these options so far, as the necks are just not fitted enough (at least from what I can see in the online images) and Boden’s offerings are only wool. The Uniqlo Heattech tops look like they would work fit-wise, but the fabric is a problem for me in sunny Arizona, even in winter. If you need to stay warm, though, there is a lot to choose from, and their Marni designs are worth browsing.

I've had my best luck with Mint Velvet's turtleneck (slightly thicker but smooth) & Seasalt Cornwall's 'Landing' top (slightly thinner cotton in a subtle mélange). Both skim the body with fitted (but not suffocating) necks for a subtropical climate.

If you *don't* want tighter turtlenecks, I'd recommend avoiding H&M

I’m going to try the J Crew Tissue Turtleneck. Thank you, Lesley. The neck does not look as fitted as I would prefer, but they do get rave reviews, so we’ll see. Just $12.95 today on the Factory site. I’m also going to try an option from Everlane. I like the neck, but the body looks potentially clingy, so I sized up. Fingers crossed!

I'm in a J Crew perfect fit turtle neck today and it does tick all the boxes.
Neck stays up, very soft, not rigid and perfect for Vancouver with an icebreaker tank under. I have found the necks on Uniqlo soft and therefore do not stay up and the J Crew tissue turtle a little thin for the cold.

The problem I’m seeing with so many turtlenecks now is that the necks are so soft that they just crumple down at the neck and don’t stand up at all. I remember years ago when the turtlenecks seemed to have more body in the neck so it would stand up close to the neck without being constricting.

The Uniqlo lightest weight HeatTech turtleneck is great, and the T-neck does not crumple up or fall down. They are fitted, so if you want more ease, size up. I always buy L rather than my usual M. I certainly don’t think you would find this top uncomfortable in an Arizona winter. I was able to see and try on the Marni HeatTech tops and they are great. Some really interesting patterns, and I’m not usually a pattern person when it comes to tops. The Marni tops run a little roomier than the regular HeatTech line.
