Turn clocks back...clean out make-up drawer

So this past weekend with turning the clocks back I decided it was time to clean out the make-up drawer. Went to the local pharmacy and got a new mascara and eye liner pencil, threw out all the old. Now I'm working on the eye shadows. Wasn't successful at the mall today but I just need to shop a bit more for the perfect colour. Lipstick will follow.

Do you have a certain time of year/holiday that you schedule this around?

I do pitch mascara every three months, or try to but for sure I always start the "year" off when I switch the clocks back.

Um, I have a blush that must be at least 15 years old . . .and a MAC lipgloss a friend gave me when my dad passed in '97. I guess I don't wear that much make up . . .

Oh Mo I wear very little make-up but my ophthalmologist is very particular about my eyes. It nearly kills me to throw away barely used stuff.

Thats a great idea. I just clean everything out every so often, when I feel like it. I get a new mascara as soon as I note that the current one isn't gliding on so easily. But I have become very disciplined and really only buy what I need.

Yes; I throw away things that are barely used because I rarely use some items of makeup. It's important to throw away old stuff because I find that they start to smell funky after awhile, and also the ingredients start to separate out!

I have some eyeshadows and powder blushes that must be 5 or so years old, but they're nice and are getting used -- they just seem to last a long time! Particularly MAC eyeshadows -- they're so heavily pigmented that a little goes a long way and I have yet to even scrape the bottom of a container of one frequently-worn shadow I know I've had for years. I have a couple of eye pencils that are getting a little brittle with age, but since they get sharpened to a fresh point frequently, I don't worry about the safety of using them on my eyes.

I run out of tinted moisturizer and mascara before they get old enough to think of throwing them away.

I got rid of some old lipsticks recently -- I just wasn't wearing them and they were starting to smell a little funky. I am really picky about scent in my cosmetics!

I use only a few products, so I just change them as they get used up. But for mascara, I try to get those little sample ones from Sephora with my points, and they are the perfect size to be used up quickly and before they get all dried out.

Oh, got it, Freckles. Safety first! I used to rarely use mascara either and it would get years old. Now that I am an almost daily wearer, it lasts the appropriate months, rather than years ha ha! The blush is powder, so I'm not too worried. The gloss is in a metal tube kind of like toothpaste, so only what you squeeze out gets used. I probably should toss it, but it seems fine still, so I don't.

That's a great idea. I try to buy new mascara every quarter - that may be a bit often but I wear contacts and I don't want to have any (more) problems with my eyes. I also try to wash all my makeup brushes on the weekends every week or two. I've had some powder eyeshadow and lipsticks for several years but all the magazines say that sort of thing is OK as long as they don't smell.

Good thinking. I am trying to get better about such things, but it hadn't occurred to me to link it to the time change.

I'm not too concerned about my powder eye shadows, but the mascara is a good point. I know a woman who almost lost her eyesight from an infection due to old mascara.
