Tunic length vs. short dress length?

So, I got an item at Neiman Marcus online and I love it but i don't know if it's a tunic (which I think of like a long shirt and I'd wear with jeans underneath) or a short dress (which I think of as something that can be worn with leggings beneath).

Again, I don't have a camera that works well so I can't post a photo on me but here's the picture from the catalog

and on me the length is: hem falls 2 inches below my longest finger when I let my arms hang at my side. So... can I wear it with leggings and boots? Thanks!

I think it's a tunic, but a long one so I'd wear it with thick opaque leggings and boots or skinny jeans. Where does it hit in relation to your knee?

I was going to ask the same thing as Kristine. I don't think it really matters what you call it- I call mine tunic dresses, and I think of them interchangeably worn with leggings or skinnies.

I don't think it has to be considered a dress in order to be worn with leggings. Leggings are made for tunics.

I think leggings would be great! The rule I tend to follow is that as long as the top covers your butt, leggings are ok! So unless you have really short arms, leggings are perfect!

Have you tried it on with both leggings and skinny jeans?

This is something that confuses me too. I like the idea of wearing dresses that are too short to wear on their own with leggings. To me, this is a short dress because if it was longer it would be a dress. To me, a tunic is a long shirt. But that's just me.
I would totally buy that if it wasn't $87!!

I'm going to disagree with Kate. I personally wouldn't wear leggings with anything shorter than a little longer than mid thigh (but age and height can factor into how that plays).

: ) You ladies rock, thank you. I'm tall and it falls mid-thigh, about 5 inches above my knees. I'll try it on with tights and boot when I return home and see if I can find someone to take a photo of me. It sound as though it might be a distinct possibility! If not, I'll also try it with skinnies. I really really appreciate your input!

I do think age and height are a factor in determining the length appropriate for a top to end with leggings. I haven't experimented enough with the look to determine where I would want something to fall.
