Tube skirt fit ETA: tried on, no luck

I've been really impressed by all the recent WIWs featuring the VC tube skirts and am considering adding one to my wardrobe. I haven't run across one yet at The Bay, but I was wondering how body-con they should fit. I had tried on a tube skirt at Old Navy recently and found the small to be a little big in the waist and didn't taper enough at the bottom, but the XS is very fitted. At least to me, since I'm a pear that generally stays away from anything body-con.

So I guess I was wondering how fitted should they be/how fitted is too much?And do people generally wear shapewear under them, or is the jersey considered sufficiently think? Thanks for your advice!

ETA - commented further down about fit after trying on the VC skirts.

The VC is two thin layers whereas the ON ones are one layer of thicker jersey.

I have an ON jersey pencil skirt in M.

I would say be as bodycon as you like -- I have tried the VC skirts in M and S (I am usually 8-10 in bottoms) and I found the M to be too big, so I settled on S. I have two of them.

I don't think you would need shapewear.

If you can try to find the VC one to compare I'd suggest that. The VC ones are magical. Can't say if other brands are equally constructed. I have too many (4 I think) but love every one.

Alana, VC is short for Vince Camuto. The tube skirts are magical. (The Bay sells some of them; you can also get them in the U.S. from Nordstrom's in more colours and patterns and a wider range of sizes.)

I find the VC skirts fit generously and have magical "coverage" properties. Granted, I am not a pretty pear body type. But there is something about the double layer of fabric that seems to provide a greater feeling of security and feels more modest, even if snug.

Mine are xs and a bit loose in the waist but smoothly body con in the hip/ bottom area. I don't worry about the waist since I don't wear anything tucked into them as a rule.

Dee, I am somewhat pear-shaped although in skirts I often wear a smaller size on the bottom so they fit at the waist. (I am generally a P2-4, and PS is P4-6 and PXS is probably P2 or P0-2.) I have no booty; I carry my weight in my thighs and could hardly walk in the VC PXS. The Nordstrom site says to size down if one is between sizes; this did not work for me AT ALL. I ended up with a PS and had them take it in at the elasticized waist. The fit is modestly bodycon; it cups in slightly at the seat and tapers slightly at the bottom and unfortunately shows where my thighs go out from my hips.

Note: The VC print tube skirts are a slightly different fabrication than the striped knit ones. I think the solid ones may also fit slightly differently. I don't think they would put one in a different size, however.

The VC skirts fit generously for a pear. I am a us 8-10 on the bottom and generally size up to L for tube skirts since I don't like a bodycon fit, but I have the VC in a M and I'd say it's not a very tight or bodycon fit. The L was gappy and saggy in the waist/belly and not tapered enough at the bottom.

Now I'm going to confuse you, based on Ceits reply. I'm generally an 8 in bottoms, and mine is a M. I would not want to go smaller... Mine curve around my butt a bit and wouldn't want it to any more! No shapewear needed. I love that they are double thickness.

I don't have one, but am reading with interest, as I'm intrigued by the idea of getting one. I could try to make one, but it would probably cost me less to buy one, especially if I consider my time. Thanks for asking the question!

I am also an 8-10 but mostly 8 and I have one in a Petite Medium and it fits nicely. I don't have a really nice smooth hipline and I find it is magic in its ability to give a smooth look.

I have one in a petite large and I'm curvy and maybe an 8-10 in bottoms. I tried both that and a PM, but decided I'd feel more comfortable in the less bodycon fit. And I don't wear mine with shapewear either. I wear mine constantly, so I definitely recommend!

Ceit, I was impressed by the thickness of the ON jersey! Do you feel yours has held up well? I might consider that to see if I really end up wearing it often. Sounds like you had the same fit experience I did, though.

Abc, I'm still hoping to run across one in the wild, so to speak, for sizing purposes. But it looks like from some of the other responses I could make a decent guess about size if I want to order online.

Suz, the point about two layers feeling more modest is a good one. I think we're about the same size, but I carry a bit more weight in my thighs than you do, so I bet I'll need to size up to the S.

Elizabeth, lol, thanks! Maybe a body type difference between the two of you? I'm glad everyone says no shapewear though. I pretty much refuse to buy anything that needs it...

Dianthus, the smooth look is why I was asking about shapewear. Glad to hear it seems to work pretty well without it.

Aubergine, the bodycon issue is something I debate about. I'm not usually overly concerned about modesty and my work is casual, but I also don't gravitate naturally toward those kinds of fits, so this is new to me. I'm glad yours is wokring so well!

I found some VC skirts at the Bay today and tried the S and the XS. The small was so loose and gapped enough at the waist I worried it wouldn't stay up! But the XS was noticeably pulling across the hips/thighs, at least to my eyes. Does that happen to others? Maybe I'm between sizes? Left it behind and I'm reconsidering the one I tried at Old Navy, which is knee length, not midi, but fit much better.

Dee, how about you bring one of those VC skirts home with you and show us? Or better yet - - bring them both (both sizes I mean) and compare. They are totally returnable within 30 days, so there is no loss. I remember last year Diana had to experiment with a few sizes before she found her sweet spot, but once she did, she never looked back.

Suz, I would have snapped some pictures but the dressing room was very small with a narrow mirror. I considered bringing the XS home and thinking it over, but I felt I was really trying to talk myself into it. And that always leads to closet orphans! Disappointed, but maybe I'll order the petites online and then post some pics.

My ON skirt has held up pretty well, but I just find it feels too short for me.

Interesting about the range of fits. I have a very flat rear so mine fit rather loose around the waist like Suz describes and doesn't really pull across the back. The M was huge on me, with empty saddle pockets on either side.

Here's my old k/r thread if that helps. The last photo in that thread shows several sizes of the VC tube skirt - from left to right, striped reg M, lace reg L, grey petite L, as well as a different skirt by Leith. I kept the striped one. I'd say the petite L was def closer to the reg M in width but I found it too short.

If you can find one, try the big stripes. Seriously. Something about that particular pattern is seriously flattering on everyone. You might find that what looks like too bodycon in a solid is totally fine in a stripe. Also, the fabrication is different on some of the prints (like the lace print I tried - it didn't hang or taper nearly as nicely).

Ceit, my fits were similar to yours, it sounds like. The small was just ridiculously oversized and pooling everywhere. I had hopes for the XS, and the waist fit with a little rooom but I'm apparently a bit too curvy on the bottom.

Diana, thanks for linking to your old thread. They didn't have the striped one (that's my preference, too) so I had tried on the abstract black and white print one that Shannon has. I wonder if the fabrication is different between that one and the stripe, hmm.
