Trying tunics...

I'm trying to develop the dressier side of my style, while still feeling like I'm true to my casual self. Here are two attempts with tunics - essentially they're the same look: tunic, BR Martins, and booties, with two different tunics from Nordies. The first one (1 and 2) still has the tags on, and I'm worried that even though it's XS, it's still a bit big (are the sleeves too long?). It doesn't come in petite.

1) does this look work?

2) shall I keep the Bellatrix tunic in #1 and #2?

Hi Sarah,

My preference of the two is for the second tunic. You have an awesome figure and it is much more flattering on you than the shape of the second one. As it is a fairly decent length I would be tempted to try it with jeggings or leggings and boots as well.

What she said. The second one shows off your figure so much better. Number one just looks more like a long top rather than a tunic.

to be honest, I''m not sure I love either of these tunics on you. The second one is a better shape, but the pattern doesn't grab me.

I also have to applaud you for your efforts in embracing a new style. I, too, am trying to up the elegance of my casual wardrobe and only recently came aboard the tunic train. This week, my goal is to try leggings or skinny jeans tucked into boots. I've resisted for a very long time.

I think the patterns on both of these kind of overwhelm you. Are you fairly petite? I hate to say that, because I really like them both- just not on you. I'd look for smaller in scale patterns to go with your small frame.

I really like the Bellatrix top. It's such a pretty print and I love the loose, flowy style. It looks like something you could wear with dark or light wash skinnies too. The sleeve length looks perfect to me.

The second top is nice too but it looks like a dress to me. I'm on the fence about the print--the crown like scroll is quite bold.

I like the second one best, especially with the pearls. The porportions as a tunic might be better if it were a little shorter but not as short as tunic #1.

I like them both, however I think the second one is definitely long enough to wear with opaques or leggings as a proper dress.

The pattern on the first one is gorgeous.

The first look meets your dressy-casual goal, but I consider it a top, not a tunic and the sleeves look just fine. My first thought was "What a lovely top!" The second one is much dressier and would look fab with leggings or tights (nod to LeahJane) and knee-high dress boots. It would show your dressy side.

I'm going to differ, Sarah - I like them both on you. I agree the first is a top rather than a tunic, and I think it will work well with your denim. I like the green pattern on the tunic on you - i think its cool. FWIW

Thanks, everyone - not a lot of agreement. Oh well. I have styled the second one as a dress (posted previously) and got a lot of feedback to style as a tunic ; ), which I've done with skinnies and boots. However, here I'm intentionally trying to be a bit dressier by not wearing denim...but I think I have a lot to learn...

I like both! The sleeve length in the first one does look a bit off, like it's not quite long and not quite 3/4...I suppose it could be bracelet-length :). Have you tried cuffing the sleeves and pushing them up a bit, near your elbow? Might make the whole thing look less blousy. I could also see this top peeking out from underneath a fitted jacket--that would be fab--or paired with a solid-color scarf draping down your front, again, to somewhat break up the pattern.

I like the second dress too! I am a fan of patterns, so I say go for it!

I would try the 1st with blue denim pant instead of black -Or short-heel delicate bootie shoe with the black pants, white camisole instead of brown and push up the sleeves to 3/4 length. The black heavy boots with your light features on top seem to weigh down.
Try the 2nd one with just-above-ankle-bone length black leggings and black ballet flats. The pants and boots look too heavy for the fine fabric of the tunic.

I like both new tunics. The first one is very pretty. The second one is very bold. I do like the idea to push up the sleeves on #1 though.

I like how you've styled the first one though the length is perhaps more top than tunic?I think I'd pair the last one with leggings or tights as it is more dress length that tunic and the bottoms look a bit bulky? x

I like the Bellatrix Top on you. I also like the London Times dress but would put it with tights or hosiery and boots or heels. Love the pearls. I am also petite and known how hard it is to find petite clothing.

I think the first top is a little too large and thus doesn't flatter. Even though the color fits you well, I'd vote to return, unless you plan to wear it in other ways. I like #2 much better and, as several ladies here suggested, would like to see it as a dress.
Although I really think your idea is a very good one! (that a dressier tunic can really up the chic factor of a casual outfit). You should try out more of this formula.

I think #1 is, as others have said, more of a top and not a tunic (too short, imo). I also think the sleeves need to be pushed up. It's on the billowy side, which means that you loose shape by wearing it, BUT if you're ok with that I think it's pretty.

#2's shape is better, though I feel it is too long. But, like Queen Mum, "the pattern doesn't grab me." I like patterns, but something about the white crown portion placement looks off to me. If you hemmed a few inches up, it would remove some of the turquoise at the bottom and the pattern would balance out a bit; it would also make it a bit more viable to wear with heavier legwear like you have here.
